03:31 PM ET 03.08 | Chris Gamble spent nine years with the Carolina Panthers, but his hit against the salary cap was too much to bear: the team released their longtime cornerback Friday in hopes of cutting salary.

Gamble has long been a consistent player for the Panthers, but he missed 12 games this past season with a shoulder injury. Considering he's 29 years old and costs more than $10 million against the cap, it was a no-brainer to let him go.

Despite the inevitability of the move, the team expressed remorse for cutting a longtime contributor. "He always handled things the right way and we wish him the best," head coach Ron Rivera said through the team's Twitter account.

Thanks for your service Chris! Very serviceable player still, just made too much $$ and doesnt fit in the youth movement here in Charlotte. If not for injuries the past 2 years...it may have worked out different. The next team will get a good player who is a great locker room guy
