Bud Selig: You won't recognize baseball in a decade

09:03 AM ET 03.09 | Since it is one of the signature initiatives of his time as commissioner, it's not surprising that Bud Selig is very bullish on the World Baseball Classic. But in an impromptu press conference during Friday night's Mexico-U.S. game, Selig explained further what he hopes the WBC will bring to baseball. In his mind, it's a step towards an eventual "true World Series." To further explain, Selig elaborated. "Someday you get the United States vs. Japan as an example." He was talking MLB vs. Nippon Professional Baseball. The WBC is where you could still see the U.S. vs. Japan, and to Selig the World Baseball Classic is a big step towards that broader goal. As he sees it, the interest in Europe, South America and Asia is growing because of the World Baseball Classic. Whether it ever becomes a bigger deal in the U.S. seems incidental to Selig's goals. "The goal here is to internationalize the sport," Selig said. "This is what we're trying to do. In my judgement if we do it right you won't recognize the sport in a decade. "We'll look back on this in retrospect one day and we'll see a sport that is legitimately a worldwide sport. If this doing what we set out to do? You bet it is."

Great idea, the Rays could then relocate to Hong Kong and people might go to their games.

Don't worry, Bud. We'll still recognize baseball without you looming over the game.

Is he not smart enough to understand that the fan base of MLB doesn't want the game internationalized?

Exactly, 'internationalizing' baseball does not seem at all interesting. I like it the way it is.

plus- who the hell wants to or can watch a game at like 3-4 in the morning? I have enough trouble watching west coast games.

I could see a scenario in which you have a consolidation of the Asian leagues, plus a more cohesive South and Central American coalition of teams. Then, the winner of the American League, the NL champion, the South American winner and the Asian champ meet for a Final Four type playoff.
Ya never know.

I wouldn't necessarily mind that- but you're talking almost a 11 month season for these guys.....that's crazy long- especially for pitchers who are logging 230+ innings (including playoffs)
do all these countries even play at the same times?

If you look at any MLB roster, you'll see baseball is already internationalized.

Not necessarily. Keep the season like it is at 162 games, then begin the playoffs. After the NL and AL championships, then you'd bring in the Asian and South American champs.
Good question about the seasons being compatible. I know the Caribbean league is different, but it could work if MLB made it work. Not sure about the Asian league.
