Sox face opening without Big Papi

Two years, $26 million. The deal was signed while he was wearing a boot. What could go wrong?

hehehehehehehe..... curiousity: Was this another of Theo Epsteins's signings? Not for nuttin' but before he left I gotta say, in my humble opinon (flips quarter to Lou), he left a trial of disaster.

Yep. and the Sox already regret it. This is exactly why the Sox had given him a succession of one year offers in recent years. Shoulda stuck to one year. And, like Schilling in 08, Papi won't be giving any of it back.

Nope. Theo was gone. No one is sure who made this decision. Luccino, Henry, Cherington. All I can say is that this was NOT a baseball decision.

For the red sox, 13 million a year just has a nice ring to it.

Let's see...he's gonna try and hit a baseball four times a game...and if he hits the ball ...will run/trot the bases like he always has....put some extra padding in the cleats/ spikes and get on with it already...

problem with putting Ortiz in the game, even as the DH, is that I remember when Mantle was a the end of his career and his legs were finally giving up on him. He woudl come into the game as a pinch hitter (no DH then) and he would cream the ball (he could still turn on a ball) and if it didn't make it over the fence and hit the wall or even found a gap he would barely make it to first base. And if Mantle only hit that "single" he couldn't stay in the game becausehe simply could not run.
And, that is what Oritz will be if his injury is that serious. A gap singles hitter that will need to be replaced as a runner or an over the wall hitter.

One other thing: I am not sure what Ortiz' injury is exactly but if it is anything like plantar facisitis (I had it for a spell) then it can be very painful just to walk. So, on one hand I could careless about Ortiz (especilly since he is a red sux) but on the other I can sympathize with the pain he may be feeling and how it is truly hindering his ability to "play" the game.

Cannot conceive that this injury is in any way shape or form as bad Mantle' s knees were at the end of his career.....and if it is that bad..I don't ever want to read on these threads again about how incompetent the Mets medical staff is...because this would take the cake...pissing away $26mil on a DH who can't run....

I saw Mantle play in once ... in '68 at the Angels.
