08:13 AM ET 03.12 | In the eyes of Bryce Harper, the countdown is on, which is a good thing for American baseball fans. [Harper], the Washington Nationals' emerging superstar, doesn't plan to miss the next World Baseball Classic. "In four years, absolutely I want to play, 100 percent," Harper said Monday. "They can write my name down right now." Harper, 20, already has represented USA Baseball twice, winning gold medals in the 2009 18-and-under Pan American Junior Championships in Venezuela and 2008 16-and-under Pan Am Youth Championships in Mexico. He gets it. He gets the whole thing. "I'm all for USA," Harper said. "I'm all for playing in the WBC and the Olympics, whatever."

exactly, I read an article yesterday that encapsualtes the whole idea as the WBC as nothing more than an exhibiton (as far as the US is concerned) because for various reasons (too many to go into here) the US will never field a team that is truly representative of the USA's best players.

MLB likes for one simple reason: It is a easy, cheap way to scout talent from other countries all in one place and time.

And they still use that stupid photo....

Yes, yes they do. Someone doesn't like him.

Unfortunately, in 2017, A-Rod will still dominate the headlines.

That's a clown tournament, bro.

The pitching staff is nothing to write home about, but the team has a very solid hitting lineup. I for one have enjoyed these games and the US is putting out 100% effort as far as I can tell. It beats the heck out of spring training that's for sure.

I like Harper, he's going to love it here in NY!!!

March 12, 2013  01:35 PM ET

Harper could be expanding his strikezone plus he should have more time to explore any other areas in the batting box,,,

When he's beating up on the Mets?

He plays for Washington and they're gonna hold on to him like grim death.

Bryce will think differently when he realizes he could be risking many millions of dollars of future earnings by playing in the stupid thing.

Disagree vehemently, Bryce should be thinking about being the next Mickey Mantle...with a good batting eye and not swinging at crap pitches.
I suggest you take a gander at Teddy Ballgame's "The Science Of Hitting"...

So what's your point? MLB should avoid cheap, easy,... and clean... ways to scout talent from other countries all in one place and time? Not sure if serious.

Good for Harper. I really enjoy the WBC. I like to see baseball growing and being played in other countries.
