Report: D'Antoni wanted Knicks to keep Lee

04:20 PM ET 03.12 | With Amar'e Stoudemire set to undergo yet another operation on his knee, which will cost him at least six weeks this season, it's caused many to re-visit the Knicks decision to give the all-star power forward a maximum contract in 2010 even though his balky knees made the contract uninsurable. And while then New York coach Mike D'Antoni put up a brave face at the time, he reportedly preferred the team re-sign David Lee with some of the cap space they had that summer instead of chase Amar'e. While Lee isn't any better defensively than Amar'e, he has continued to post excellent numbers in his time in Golden State and he's obviously much healthier at this point in their respective careers. However, since the Knicks already used their amnesty provision on Chauncey Billups, they don't have many other options besides hoping Amar'e can find a few more years in his knees.

exactly-
and at the time- if they kept lee and that major contract he got from GS they wouldn't have been able to be players in the FA market.
All NY fans liked lee- but with all due respect to david-
what exactly has he accomplished since NY?
no playoffs the past 2 years and they are struggling to keep a hold on this years 7-8 seed....its not like his teams been tearing it up

Would you rather have D Lee or Amare on the Knicks right now? I'd be willing to bet you'd rather have Lee...

lol.
in a vacuum? sure
lee is actually playing. amare is not-
but the bottom line is that had we re-signed lee-
the dominoes wouldn't have fallen where they were and melo wouldn't have been here.

Don't get me wrong- NY has made mistakes, but as I asked earlier- where exactly is GS with lee?
and where were we in the 2 years before he left?
*and I like lee* but a team centered around him is not serious playoff team

I'm with JGB and would rather have Lee now that Amare is down but before that, Amare was clearly the better and more talented player. And he was the first domino in the order of getting the team back to respectability. So with that said...**** David Lee.

Serious playoff team? Knicks have an old Kurt Thomas 40, Jason Kidd 39, Camby 38, Wallace 38, Prigioni 35, Martin 35 and Amare with a body of a 60 year old man. Kidd has played more seasons than the Warriors entire starting line up. Knicks are OLD. Maybe the Warriors are not a serious playoff team, but young is on their side.
