Juwan Howard returns to Heat

04:25 PM ET 03.12 | The Heat signed Juwan Howard to a second 10-day contract on Tuesday, despite not playing him once during the entirety of his first 10-day contract with the team. Howard, a 40-year old who has played in the NBA for 18 seasons, is a beloved figure in the Heat locker room after spending the last two seasons there. He averaged two points and two rebounds a game last season, but his most notable contribution may have been an off-court dust-up with Pacers guard Lance Stephenson about some comments Stephenson had made in the midst of their heated second-round playoff series. After winning his first NBA title in 2012 and not appearing on a roster for the first half of this season, many expected that Howard would ultimately retire. Instead, Miami has brought him back to be a wise veteran presence in the locker room, although he may never see the floor this season as the team tries to defend its championship.

He's not even suiting up for games. Riles seems to be loyal to former Heat centers.

I think it's an insurance policy more than anything. He let Eddy Curry hang around last year and I don't think he ever used him.
But this is the kind of talent you can afford when you are paying your "Big 3" that kind of money.

Spoelstra will make good use of Howard's six fouls per game in the postseason. He doesn't play much, but you can never have too many big bodies and too many fouls.
I don't really understand, though, why they need another wise veteran presence in the locker room. This isn't a particularly young team.

Howard has been with the Heat since 2010. The Heat had a open roster spot and who better to fill it then someone who knows what his role will be.
