Brady likely not thrilled by move

08:04 AM ET 03.14 | Welker-from-Manning may have an odd ring to it as we near the Ides of March, but the Broncos hope it's a Mile High match. [Welker] reportedly was upset with the offer he received from the New England Patriots at the start of free agency. He now joins one of the Patriots' biggest rivals for AFC supremacy -- and will catch passes from Peyton Manning rather than his good friend [Brady]. Brady, for whom Welker caught 118 passes last season, recently signed a contract extension designed to free up money for the Patriots to sign players under the salary cap. He will not likely by thrilled by the departure of Welker to play for the only other quarterback of this era who rivals his accomplishments.

I care, as does everyone else in Patriot Nation. Not signing Welker is a seriously bad move by the Pats front office. Yeah, we'll dominate the AFC East pretty much by default, but don't look for this team to play the big one in East Rutherford.

Goodbye to one of the best guys every to wear the uniform.

Not thrilled? Not even tickled? How about mildly amused?

March 14, 2013  08:20 AM ET

One of these days, Brady will realize he doesn't need the money, they've given away his favorite target (and gotten nothing in return), and he'd rather be in California with his hot wife than in New England with the Hoodie.

The dynasty is dead. It will be a few years before it falls over and just lies there with its eyes staring blankly, but that's it. Thanks for a fun ride.

The worst part isn't the fact that Welker won't be there next year. The worst part is the Patriots players knowing that RK and BB seriously speak out of both sides of their mouths. Brady's got to feel like a fool structuring his contract so the team could re-sign players. He didn't realize they meant resign players.

Hey, they did get Danny Amendola. The younger version of next year's Danny Amendola.

Yes, I remember all the Super Bowl trophies Wes Welker helped lead the Pats to.

I don't understand why any Pats fan would be upset losing the ultimate big game no show, but then again I don't understand why anybody would be a Pats fan, so..

If he can stay healthy, he'll fit in well.

Brady will be fine. He didn't miss Deion Branch, a Superbowll MVP and Randy Moss, racking up all those TD's so why would he miss Welker especially if those two TE's he has can remain healthy.

March 14, 2013  08:57 AM ET

I've been a big Welker fan. I even have a Welker replica jersey hanging in my closet. But, frankly, his departure doesn't have me sounding the death knell of the franchise. He is still tough as nails but honestly, he's not the same player he was in 07 and 08. There have been a lot dropped passes, not just those in championship games. And, maybe, a loss of a step too. They picked up Amendola for less guaranteed money. That's good. I'd also like to see them resign Edelman. Although, it would not surprise me to see Edelman go to the Rams. No worries. Pats will be in the championship hunt again this season.

Next thing you know Denver will sign Randy Moss.

If the two tight ends stay healthy and Amendola stays healthy nobody is going to be feeling sorry for Tom, because he's going to be torching the league. The problem is, none of those players tend to stay healthy for a whole season.

He didn't miss Branch and Moss because Wes Welker was always there. Besides that, Branch and Moss were the deep pattern guys. Once teams learned that the only way to keep Brady from completing those fly routes was to pressure him, the Pats started completing mostly short passes, and that's on reason Welker has been such a key player.

Look for the tight ends on short crossing patterns this year. You're going to see a lot of it.

March 14, 2013  09:29 AM ET

It was never about money. Never. He just took a $3 million paycut. To average $6 million a year for two years? This guy with his track record? The Pats knew he was moving on a long time ago, They had his replacement lined up one minute after they could back room deal. I thought it would be Cruz, but hard to knock their choice. Nothing stays the same in the NFL.

Most likely. Besides, offense is not some big problem, and change is a good thing. Not a Pats fan, but I do respect their accomplishments and organization. As Winnie said, This is not the end, it is not the beginning of the end, it is the end of the beginning....Something like that.

I am a HUGE Patriots fan and have been all my life.. Why am I the only one not upset by this move.. Let me ask you this question.. How many Super Bowls did the Patriots win with Welker on the roster? ZERO! The formula just wasn't there. Welker was just a product of the Patriots offense. Yes I am a little scared about Amendolas past injuries, but the guy is a STUD.. I would not be surprised at all to see him put up Welkers numbers throughout his career in New England! So don't fret Patriots fans.. In Bill Belichick we trust!
