Manning approached to recruit Welker

08:05 AM ET 03.14 | Considering Peyton Manning's connection to Brandon Stokley, it's hard to see him in the position he was on Wednesday. Do not think that Manning pushed for the Broncos to sign New England slot man Wes Welker from free agency. This was John Elway's deal. Yes, Elway, the Broncos front-office boss, called Manning on Monday. Yes, Manning among other Bronco players honored Elway's request and made a recruiting call to Welker. ... When Stokley was asked earlier Wednesday about the Broncos' pursuit of Welker, he said: "I think it would be a great move if (the Broncos) got him. I think he would be a great fit here." Stokley did realize Welker would take his job, right? "I know that," Stokley said with a chuckle.

Poor Wes. Goes from Brady to Manning. Some day he'll get a break.

Historically, guys who have left the Patriots have all left their best years behind them in New England. This could be an exception, though.

Peyton and Wes? Match made in heaven! A WR that runs 7 yard routes and a QB that can only throw 7 yards deep.

Decline or not, everyone involved knew that Welker was an upgrade over Stokley, and acted accordingly

A look at the contract number shows it was personal, he just wanted out of N.E.

The Broncos didn't break the bank signing Welker. They just offered a little more than the Pats did.

I doubt it. He wanted out last year. I swear, it was not about money. He stopped even talking contract a long time ago with the Pats. Just my thought, but I am convinced until otherwise proven wrong.

Even modern science agrees, although they refer to BB as the Big Bang for some reason.

Nice pickup for the Manning window. Fair price too. Hopefully Denver will draft defense in the in April.

Perhaps this mystery call from Peyton Manning explains Welker's sudden interest in buying a new Sony TV.

Thought that as soon as I heard. That's why the Broncos didn't pursue Mike Wallace. Manning couldn't throw the ball deep enough.
