08:20 AM ET 03.14 | That Blake Geoffrion may retire from the game at 25 has many understandably concerned. The Montreal Canadiens announced that [Geoffrion] notified general manager Marc Bergevin Wednesday that in light of his health condition, which has shown no significant improvement since he underwent surgery last November 10, he felt it was his responsibility to inform the Canadiens' management that he was considering retiring from professional hockey. ... [Geoffrion] suffered a depressed skull fracture on November 9, 2012 in an AHL game between the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Syracuse Crunch, at the Bell Centre. The Montreal Canadiens management, [Geoffrion], his agent and family will not comment any further on the situation until further notice.

I had a feeling this might come about as soon as there was no word at the beginning of this shortened season. Although he got a shot at his dream (like few others can relate), I wish it didn't have to end like this. While I wish he would come back and play, his health and well-being must be paramount.

Somehow Ted Green managed to continue playing (and even coached in the NHL) with a steel plate in his head after Wayne Maki cracked his skull open with his stick. He suffered some brain damage but, he was able to keep going. I guess not everybody is so lucky.

No, not everyone is, and having your brains possibly scrambled by another hit would make anyone thnk twice about their chosen profession. I cannot say what I would do in that situation, but like I said before, he has to make the right decision for him with all the information available.

For BGM who probably only knows Scotty as a hated coach.
He was actually a failry hot Montreal Jr Canadien.
But:
The end came during the final minutes of a Junior A playoff game at the Montreal Forum in 1951. Bowman was on a breakaway toward the opposing goal with a defenseman named Jean-Guy Talbot in pursuit. Talbot, his team on the verge of elimination from the playoffs, swung his stick twice at Bowman in frustration. Bowman was struck in the head???none of the players wore helmets in those days???and lost a piece of his skull. He required a metal plate in his head. His playing days were over. He understood hockey's intense, sometimes violent nature, however, and never held a grudge. A few years later, Bowman was coaching the St. Louis Blues when the team added Talbot to its roster. Bowman coached him for three years.
