12:59 PM ET 03.14 | Christian Ponder is throwing a football for the first time since he injured his right triceps in January, according to 1500ESPN.com. Last season, Ponder suffered a cruel twist of fate after leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 10-6 record and the first playoff berth of his career. In the last regular season game, Ponder was hit on the elbow by Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett, effectively knocking him out of the NFC Wild Card game against the Packers the following Saturday. Now, Ponder is back throwing and believes he will be ready for OTAs that roll around in the spring, according to ESPN. The Vikings need Ponder to step up this season with the team already jettisoning wide receiver/returner Percy Harvin and cornerback Antoine Winfield.

He'd be a backup on any other team.

With the Vikes signing Cassel, Ponder either will step up or step to the sidelines and watch.
