04:25 PM ET 03.14 | With Andrew Bynum looking increasingly unlikely to play this season, the Philadelphia 76ers may not be on the hook for a good portion of his $16.9 million salary. "There's a league-wide insurance that he's under that gives you some relief along those lines," 76ers president Rod Thorn told reporters on Wednesday. "It's the same league-wide program that every player is under. Unless you have a pre-existing condition -- and he didn't." Philadelphia paid a hefty price to bring in the All-Star center in the off-season, but he's been sidelined by a series of injuries to his knees that have kept him out all season. He will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, putting the 76ers in a difficult quandary about how much money they should offer him given his uncertain medical condition.

There is no 'quandary'...
they must PASS
- its one thing for another team to take a gamble-
but they already got worked by his brittle knees....they just cannot afford to have him return and be on and off the shelf.

This definitely falls into the "not-compounding-mistakes" category. They took a shot and missed.

Nothing about this kid has ever screamed franchise player other than his size... so move on and enjoy beating the team that gives him the max.

yup- don't make your bad gamble worse-

I did think he had the ability to be a franchise guy-
but questionable work ethic and bad injuries have curtailed that

I'd offer him the league minimum.

Same with Greg Oden.

I'd gladly give him a contract with huge incentive bonuses but he has to show that he cares enough to work and take this whole thing seriously.

Your highest paid player HAS to be a leader to be successful long term and if he's not you are vulnerable to a wild roller coaster ride.

At least his fro is doing well and that's all that matters.
