Houston blames 'distractions' for Lions woes

08:03 AM ET 03.15 | Lions cornerback Chris Houston, after signing a five-year deal worth $25 million with Detroit Wednesday, has higher hopes going into 2013. [Houston] is confident Detroit will rebound this season, and there is a good reason why. "Getting good players in our locker room," Houston said. "I think we had a lot of distractions last year on the offensive side of the ball. There were so many free agents on the defensive side of the ball and the chemistry wasn't there, but I think upstairs, they're doing a great job of getting guys in here who are about football." It is safe to assume Houston is talking about Titus Young and not Calvin Johnson? Detroit cut ties with Young, who was a big distraction, at the beginning of this year.

This team does have some talent, and shouldn't suck as much as they did last season. But, a change at head coach will be needed before they are a contender.

You still need a good coach and that's what Detroit doesn't have!!!!!!!

If Calvin Johnson ends up with almost 2,000 yards receiving again this year, Detroit won't be going anywhere. The offense is far too predictable and one-dimensional.

When you have top of the round draft picks for as many years as they did, you cannot help but have some talent laying around. I think they have moved up from bottom feeders to mediocrity, which will be called their high water mark in a few short years.

Why was Titus Young here, because Martin Mayhew drafted him ignoring the fact Titus was trouble coming out of Boise State University. A wasted pick #44 in the 2011 draft. He did the same thing overlooking injuries like the concussion Best had at Cal (wasted pick #30 in the 2010 draft since he will never play again). Mayhew has hit on most of the high picks, Stafford, Suh and for the most part Fairley. However most of his other picks haven't worked out. Riely Reiff was their 1st round pick just last year, drafted as a tackle and recently said they think he'll compete for the RG spot, ugh.
This is a big draft for him and the seat should be getting hotter everyday day until they improve.

Only 32 of those jobs available ( NFL HCs) and less than half are filled with qualified people that can deal with players and their agents . They have the same owner , stale logo , and colors . Bill Ford is known as a great owner ...But nice guys keep finishing last ..last ..last . They aquire great prospects , overpay them . Year after year they fill hole and patch up other positions with underacheivers , divas , used up leftovers . They live under the old joke of F>O>R>D FixOrRepairDaily.

"Bill Ford is known as a great owner", according to who?
Most fans like myself believe he's a Mr. Magoo type. Completely aloof and asleep at the wheel. Hiring Matt Millen (who had ZERO front office is experience) to become GM was bad and only made worse when Ford allowed Millen to stay on the job for EIGHT seasons. In 7 full seasons under Millen they went 31-81, among the worst stretches EVER for a franchise.
Why Ford allowed him to stay that long is beyond me especially since at one point they didn't win a road game for 3 consecutive seasons. He spends stupidly and stays with underpeforming HC and GM's wayyyy toooo long. No part of that can be considered a "great owner".
He's fortunate the state of Michigan LOVES their football as much as they do, between the Lions, Spartans and Wolverines they will have about 250,000 fans go through turnstiles on a typically fall weekend.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you RJ. I hadn't heard about playing Reiff at OG though. It sure looks to me like they will need him at RT at the very least this fall, and that would be assuming that they grab an OT with the #5 pick (as opposed to getting Milliner, if he is available, or one of the outstanding DEs who should be available).
Oh, and don't forget about the Ryan Broyles pick this past year. Great potential, just like Best and Young, but will he be able to stay healthy?
The second round has not been kind to the Lions.
