Elway on Elvis salary: 'It's so far out of whack'

08:04 AM ET 03.15 | The clock is ticking on Elvis Dumervil's tenure in Denver, but the Broncos, as of Friday morning, were standing firm. By no later than 1:59 p.m. Friday, Dumervil will either take a pay cut or be gone from the Broncos. "These are the deals that wrench your gut," [John Elway] said Thursday. ... The Broncos have determined it would be foolhardy to pay Dumervil $12 million per year, a salary the team obviously thinks is extravagant. "It's not all about dollars. But when it's way out of whack? Then it's so out of whack that you've got to say: That (salary) can't be it. Especially when you look at the market and what's out there now," Elway told me. "It's so far out of whack. Hopefully, he realizes that."

Pay the man Elway.

Elvis has left the building.

He's only 29. There are a lot of good years left, and somebody will over-pay for his services.

Say bye-bye to Mile High.

Philly needs a pass rusher and just freed up a lot of $$

March 15, 2013  09:21 AM ET

Nobody will give him $12 Million, his agent did well the first time around, now comes reality.

March 15, 2013  09:23 AM ET

he's a 3-4 OLB anyway....he's playing out of position as a DE. either make $6 mil and play for a winner or make a little more than that and play for the [insert bad team here]

Beware the Ides of March!

The draft is their best bet.

March 15, 2013  09:33 AM ET

This will come back to haunt the Broncos!!!!!!!

That would mean Philly management is learning. I don't buy it

He is being overpaid for the market.... not like baseball - you can at least get people down to realityville. So - if he don't like it... find a job elsewhere - to the highest bidder - go the spoils....

I love the smell of Capitalism in the morning.

I would like to know who was the whacker who gave this contract in the first place. The NFL is the cruelest business in sports today, with most contacts not guaranteed and it is not about what you have done for us in the past, but what can you do for us now at a cheaper price.

Yes, a standard overpayment, not a ridiculous overpayment. He's a good player.

Of course it is out of whack! But so is the cost of a ticket and parking and a hot dog at the game and the fact NFL owners are guaranteed 22% of the $9+ billion pot before a game is ever played regardless of how lousy their product may be. If everything is out of whack, then whack is the new norm....

This where Elvis tells Elway to whack off!

Elway is gonna have to start toning it down a bit. I think he's talking a bit too much here.

March 15, 2013  10:36 AM ET

The picture says it all. It shows Elvis sacking the long retired Donovan McNabb. His best years are behind him and it's time for Elvis to take a pay cut or leave the building.

March 15, 2013  10:46 AM ET

Sounds like there will be another available football player on June 1.

I think you are right. Different now he is on the other end of the stick. As a player he demanded top dollar and the ability to pick his own team. Pay him or release him. Simple. But shut about it already. Elway is not used to getting his own way. Welcome to our world.
