08:11 AM ET 03.15 | While 76ers general manager Tony DiLeo continues to figure out what "Plan A" looks like with Andrew Bynum, Sixers great Charles Barkley has another option. Pass. "They are in a dilemma now," Barkley said by phone Thursday. "I wouldn't give Andrew Bynum any money if I'm running the team. I'm not going to take that chance." ... [If] a team were to offer Bynum just a one-year deal, Barkley says, the Sixers should keep him under one condition. "I'm not going to give a guy that is already hurt money unless they can work out an incentive-laden contract," Barkley said. "I'm not giving $15-$20 million a year for a guy who hasn't played all year. You are eating up valuable salary cap if you give him a long-term deal."

Someone will pay him ~16M / year for 3-4 years.
Who ? MJ?

though he may be right, Charles shouldn't be talking about a player's pay, publically. he made his already and I'm damn sure Charles would have gone ballistic if someone tried to "take food out of his mouth" when he was a player.

He made his money BY PLAYING. Not by signing a big contract and sitting on the bench.
Charles is a commentator now and has every right to speak whatever the heck he wants to.
While I've mostly disagreed with Chuck, in this instance he's right. Sixers need to cut their losses and thank God they didn't sign a 4-5 year deal with Bynum. I understand the concept of "losing out a player for nothing in return", but sometimes cutting your losses is the most prudent thing to do rather than piling on a bad decision.
Heck ATL letting Smith walk would be a lot worse decision than Sixers letting Bynum go w/o compensation.

My 76ers have a huge dilemma simply because the free agent market is terrible this year, and they will be in Basketball Purgatory for years. If you could get Bynum to sign a 1 or 2 years deal, I would still roll the dice simply because there are no superstars out there who the Sixers can attract. If they let Bynum go, there are a few Free Agents like Josh Smith out there who can make us a 7th or 8th seed, but that just means we won't be in the lottery and will lose in the first round.
As much as I love the NBA, there are just too many teams and not enough superstars to go around, as half the league is irrelevant (going through the motions for 82 games) simply because they don't have a marquee player.

Barkley is absolutely right. I'd like to know how management keeps a job in Philly. They're paying $20 million for Bynum and Kwame freakin' Brown.

Ridiculous! They could actually get more from the D League than they're getting now. Bynum's a bum. It's ludicrous to to spend another quarter on his injury prone arse.

That would be disappointing. (although I'm not a Rockets fan) The Rockets have made nice decisions the last year -- including signing Asik.

The Rockets run their organization a lot like I run mine on 2K13, which is not a compliment.
As long as you can keep flipping those pieces your alright, but what happens when your two poison pills kick in?

For one season, you're screwed. But it is better than screwing your for all 4 seasons (as long as you don't mind paying the tax 1 season ... and having your hands tied for that 1 year) or being irrelevant/bad team.

The sad part is that somebody will take a chance on him. There are teams lining up to talk to Oden who hasn't played at all in a few years. So you know somebody will give Bynum a look.

It just doesn't make sense to give someone with degenerative knees a long term deal. Who in their right mind would be dumb enough to do that? Really? I wholeheartedly agree with Chuck. You aren't taking food out of a guys mouth when he can't even get on the court to play.
