No typical spring break for Ole Miss Samaritans

08:22 AM ET 03.15 | This is not your typical spring-breaker trip for Mississippi's players. [Panama City's] warm weather and white, sandy beaches attract thousands of young people looking for fun and relaxation. This year, six Ole Miss football players are traveling to Panama City for spring break week. But it's probably not the city you're thinking of. Senior linebacker D.T. Shackelford (Decatur, Ala.) is leading a group of Rebel teammates on a week-long mission trip to the capital city of the Republic of Panama, where they will visit an orphanage, feed the homeless, speak to school-age children and run a free football clinic, among other activities.

Good work by these young men. It's always good to give something back.

I for one, would support a change in the team name from Rebels to Samaritans. When they played well, they would of course be Good Samaritans. And then sometimes they would be Bad Samaritans. Currently, they're just Rebels.

I thought the school already had a new name/mascot - Bears, or something like that. Obviously, it didn't take.

This would be a logo-designer's nightmare.
How do you design one that strikes fear in your opponents? Especially when they could be either Good or Bad, depending on circumstances? Tough.
Their whole mascot-changing stuff has been strange right from the start, and it sure looks like the effort hasn't gotten much traction, at least judging by the impact seen from outside Ole Miss territory. Used some kind of voting process with a slate of candidates that ranged from bland all the way to off-the-chart crazy. Not trying to run down Ole Miss, really not, just don't see this thing doing much to improve the mascot situation.

So instead of taking money from boosters they'll be feeding the homeless?
OK just kidding ... it's nice to see the human side of players.

Rebels with a cause. lol
IMO they should remain Rebels and tell the rest of the politically correct crowd to just deal with it. Too much of our American heritage is being tossed out to appease crybaby's. Our heritage is what it is. In a similar vein, the Stars and Bars is simply a neat flag to me that is a part of America's heritage. It says nothing about slavery to me, which I have nothing but disgust for in any form in any country at any time.

Well, since Samaria was in present day Palestine, they could have a logo of a terrorist.
