Realignment's biggest losers

08:27 AM ET 03.15 | Winners abound in a more sensibly drawn geographical NHL map, but the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers are not among them. Take a look at the map. The Florida teams have to fly over an entire division to get to their nearest divisional rivals (excluding each other). For most teams, realignment is decreasing travel. Not for the Panthers and the Lightning. Here was Lightning GM Steve Yzerman on the issue earlier this month (from TampaBay.com): "The travel, crossing the border and flying (past) Carolina and Washington to play teams in our division, those are things we don't like about it for our organization." ... The plus side is that the teams in their new division like Montreal, Toronto and Boston will equal bigger ticket sales.

This would all be moot if the Lightning and Panthers do the sensible thing and move to Hamilton and Quebec.

Dont know why he is complaining. They get BOS, MTL and TOR more foten. I dare say there are about 20 other US teams that would love that "problem". As the article mentions, it is a huge plus for ticket sales. And that is probably the most important factor these 2 teams should consider.

Stamkos is a super star...i'd pay an outrageous ticket to see him play.....and to me there are only 3 super stars....Stamkos, Crosby and Malkin.

So do we, when Montreal, Detroit, Boston, Toronto, New York are in town. Now that we're in a division with most of 'em, it'll be like one big road trip next year!

probably the idea is that the florida teams will host tons of premiere franchises with huge fanbases. If that's not enough to fill up the buildings, then they can just move them. Overall I actually don't disagree with this aspect of of the realignment.
If you can't fill your barn with regular visits from boston, mtl, toronto and detroit...then just pull the plug.
