Dumervil's camp blames Broncos for fax snafu

10:58 PM ET 03.15 | The Denver Broncos thought they had finally talked Elvis Dumervil off the ledge and into a restructured contract. While that was indeed the case, the Broncos failed to fax the agreement to the league and as a result have been forced to release Dumervil as a result of missing the 4 p.m. ET deadline to get a new deal done with him. The fax snafu is a rare case and it's confusing a lot of people. While Dumervil had agreed to lower his salary, as was reported earlier, he needed to sign the agreement and have it faxed back the the league before the 4 p.m. ET deadline, which he failed to do. As a result, Dumervil has been unconditionally released by the Broncos and is officially an unrestricted free agent, able to sign with any team that is willing to give him a contract.

I don't really see why Dumervil is upset about this.
If Denver wants him they can still sign him for whatever they had previously agreed upon. If not, well now he has the chance to sign with any of the other teams.
Not a bad deal, way I see it.

That said, it is sort of an egregious error on Broncos' management's part.
I mean, what if Dumervil goes to Oakland or Kansas City, or even San Diego?
Dumervil may be a one-trick pony, but he's pretty good at his one trick. Denver better hope there's no hard feelings and that Elvis agrees to a new deal.

I can see why he's upset. The Broncos are building a team to compete in a Super Bowl. {pukes}
He may get paid but he may not sniff a ring depending on where he ends up.

I suppose you're right.
And I applaud you; I know that was hard for you to say.

I wonder if it was an true error, or a calculated 'error'. Both sides are conflicting in what actually happened. Broncos say they didn't change deal since 11am MDT, agent is saying they changed it an hour before the deadline and didn't get the contract to sign until 15 minutes before 4pm EST. Guess we'll never know, but it does make you wonder.

It was - but unfortunately, it's the truth. Denver is going to be a tough out this year. For everybody.

Agreed. Dumervil is one of the few people who have no right to complain here.
He either still ends up with the contract that he allegedly was willing to receive... or someone else will offer him even more. It's a win / win for him.

My suspicion is that the agent is to blame.
Dumervil was ready to sign for significantly less than he was initially demanding. And if the agent simply drags his feet on faxing the paperwork over, he opens the door for Dumervil to talk to 31 other teams.
The agent had every financial motivation to send a late fax.

That's an interesting tidbit.

But they are still saving money. He would have had $12 million guaranteed, he agreed to $8 million and now they are on the hook for a lesser $5 million.
Of course, it could have been Dummervil that was responsible for the snafu - but I just don't see how the deal didn't get done if both sides truly intended to make it happen.

Twins, if they do manage to resign him as an UFA do they still have to absorb the cap hit?

Yea, I can see why the Broncs are gripping right now. That takes his 8mil to 13mil if they have to absorb the dead money. Brings a whole new meaning to the term 'FREE' agency.

The truth will come out in a day or two. If heads roll inside Bronco world somebody messed up sending the fax on time. My question is who in business today still sends faxes?????
