A's outfielder Michael Taylor slices finger throwing out gum

08:05 AM ET 03.16 | Michael Taylor greeted me this morning by holding up his right pinkie for inspection: It has one ugly gash on it, and another that has healed. Taylor sliced his finger last week -- while throwing out his gum. He's 6-foot-5, and his hand hit the light on the ceiling of the dugout as he made the toss. So he's missed a week, he told me, and he cannot play until the cut has totally closed, which it has not. Taylor has little chance of making the team, given that the A's have a full complement of outfielders; the problem here is that Taylor cannot do his work at first base as he tries to learn the position to become more versatile. Meanwhile, two other minor-league outfielders, Michael Choice and Shane Peterson, have been putting on a show with the two best offensive springs for the team thus far.

One, this was in the news last week. Old news. Two, so glad that AA traded Taylor from the Halliday deal for Wallace, who in turn he traded to Houston to get Anthony Gose, who he wanted originally in the Halliday deal(they sent him to Houston in the Oswalt deal).
Don't know how the Astro's let go of a possible five tool player(tons of speed, use to throw 95 regularly as a pitcher in high school, just needs to develop some power) for a so-so first base prospect without much pop. Then again, I don't know how you cut yourself throwing out a piece of gum. And they thought Hatteburg was going to have trouble learning first.

Wouldn't it be easier to have them just swallow the gum while in the dugout?

Playing around in the dugout has probably cost you another year at Sacramento, and at your age you cannot afford to many more years there in Triple A.
