The NFL disputed a published report that indicated the Patriots had filmed the St. Louis Rams' walkthrough prior to Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002. "We were aware of the rumor months ago and looked into it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an e-mail. "There was no evidence of it on the tapes or in the notes produced by the Patriots, and the Patriots told us it was not true." The Boston Herald reported yesterday that the Patriots had filmed the walkthrough, citing an unnamed source.

The Boston Herald is about as reliable and trustworthy a news forum as Fox news.

Aiello's comments don't make sense. They looked into it and "[t]here was no evidence of it on the tapes or in the notes produced by the Patriots"? But all the Patriots produced was tapes from 2006/7. They didn't give the NFL any tapes from their Superbowl championship years. How do you "look into" something by asking for entirely unrelated material?

(you heard it from me )

I think its silly that this is being brought up right before the Super Bowl. However, according to Aiello, the NFL is drawing conclusions based on what the Patriots gave them and on statements made by the Patriots. That's a little naive if you ask me. If you were a prosecutor, you wouldn't base your case on evidence provided by the defendant and statements by the defendant assuring you that he did not commit the crime.

The walkthrough with the Rams was redzone plays, the Rams didn't even get into the redzone to late 3rd quarter, in fact we didn't stop em in the redzone so even if the tapes were done, it didn't help, just like the other tapes.
Random senator subpoenas for every issue is an extremely disturbing trend. The government cant rebuild New Orleans or Iraq but wasting time on a matter that is not even illegal by US laws is scary

Who cares.... sounds like the Boston Herald is just doing it's part to fire up the patriot players.

February 3, 2008  09:17 AM ET

That is exactly what it sounds like. And I hope your boy makes it in.

Tunafish: For argument's sake - Is it OK to cheat on a test even if you would have achieved the same score had you not cheated?

February 3, 2008  09:20 AM ET

I agree Darrell. It sounds like a story cooked up (by a local paper) to give the Patriots extra motivation.

February 3, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Im so sick of the daily article or two comming out bashing the Pats. Im a huge Pats fan but a huge football fan in general, and I see the bringing up spygate thing now as a very bad thing for the game. How much of the pregame and the on air commentating is going to be dedicated to this garbage. Wait until after the pro bowl then you have all off season to hash it all out.... talking about it now is a huge black eye on the NFLs biggest day

You're making a base assumption that this bold "unnamed source" is correct and that there is proof positive of the walk through being filmed.

If it's true than further investigation is warranted. If not, this is more gossip that will be spread by haters.

Why do you think it was a NY newspaper that first broke the story about Specter? Coincidence?

You do bring up a valid point. If the NFL only reviewed the six tapes from 2006-2007, how do they know about the SB in 2002?

What was in the notes that were provided?

It is curious how Aiello does not address some of the hard questions that come up. I hope he does not succeed Goodell when his time is up.

Count yourself among the millions out there today. I'm not rooting for either team, but I'm hoping for a good game.

February 3, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Oso: No, I wasn't making any assumptions. In fact, I even stated that this was probably cooked up. I was simply asking a hypothetical question on whether it would be OK to cheat even if it didn't make any difference.

February 3, 2008  09:40 AM ET

I love the whole supposidly they did it but theres no evidence just the word of som unnamed source they in reality may not exist. I mean I have never worked for the Patriots but if I called the NY Times and made an allegation about somthing id be quoted in the next edition.
