Reds won't be pushed around by Chapman

08:16 AM ET 03.18 | Though Walt Jocketty had heard all about Aroldis Chapman's wish to remain as the team's closer, the GM was in no hurry to discuss the issue in depth. It's not a lock that Chapman will get what he wants, however. It would certainly be considered, but we don't let every player tell us how they want to be used," Jocketty told MLB.com. Chapman, who saved 38 games in 43 chances last season after being installed as closer on May 20, is currently competing with Mike Leake for a spot in the rotation. There are people in the organization who feel that Chapman could be a potential top-end starter and want to see if he could master secondary pitches to go with his high velocity.

Why would any pitcher want to be a closer instead of a starter?

The Yanks tried Rivera as a starter, and it's a good thing for them it didn't wreck his confidence.
Some guys are just better suited for closing and I would imagine a lot of them enjoy it. It's probably fun to BS around in the pen for most of the game.

Yeah, but if the owner wants you to start and you get paid much better money to start, why wouldn't you want to give it a go? Fighting to go to the bullpen doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.
Now it he starts for a year and sucks, then I understand his sentiment.

Or, maybe Chapman has a better feel for his limitations than the GM does.

His velocity drops off considerably after 1 inning. I would agree with your statement here.

Yea....but how many starters throw 100mph, mosy are in the upper 80's low 90's.
Chapman will need a couple more pitch's and need to learn to throw more off-speed stuff accuratly.

Chapman would and should minize his speed in pitching the first 5 innings, can't overthrow and keep throwing at 100 miles for more than a inning or two,,, experience its better than the power!!

you tell him walt, because you signed him as a starter he must be one whether he is the best closer in the game now or not. better to mess up his arm and screw the team in the process than listen to the man himself and the results of his work in the pen. between signing washed up ex-cards and this along with trading away half the farm system I am beginning to wonder how jocketty became so well thought of as a gm.

wiseup: Chapman knows he can be a closer after last years success. Right now Chapman has to learn and master his secondary pitches. Once he does that and has success he won't want to go back to closing. Beside the fact that the Reds signed Broxton to close. Last year the Reds aqired Sean Marshall to close. The Reds remember how that worked out. If Broxton has problem closing it may necessitate Chapman back to closing. The Reds hope that doesn't happen since broxton was signed for 7 mil for 2years

wiseup: Chapman is confident he can close and is comfortable doing that. Chapman needs to give starting a chance. Once he has some success he will feel more confident and will not want to go back to closing

If Chapman can convert to a top starter, then a triumvrate of Chapman-Cueto-Latos could result in a World Series ring. If Homer Bailey is your No. 4 guy, you're pretty damn good.

Walt better make Chapman happy now before he becomes eligible for free agency, if he does not he will walk to another team.

He was the best starter in camp last year, and there is little doubt forcing him to use the sickest slider in the game is a bad thing. His velocity can easily stay in the upper 90's, and along with the slider he can develop the splitter and circle change, who wants to face that every 5th day. You never let a guy that could potentially win 18-20 games as a starter rot in the bullpen...closers, as we have seen more and more lately, can be found almost anywhere.
