Alabama's opens spring with eight quarterbacks

If you are a incoming freshman why sign with Bama with no chance of playing there, instead sign with another school with a better chance of paying someday there.

Because this is A.J.s's last year and the competition will be wide open next year.

If a QB has talent, he could come in and snatch the job up immediately.

Well, 1 is a senior and the starter and then about 3 others are walkons. So, after this year, we will have 4 scholarship QBs. Probably won't need to process any.

So you have 5 scholarship QB's? 8 total QB's minus the 3 walkons.....and you aren't going to process any of these for next football season?

IMO, 4 scholly QB's is bit much, and 5 would definitely be to many...but that's just me.

You sign to have a chance to be coached by the best...to be part of the best...and win championships. If you have that competitive fire in your belly, you will want to be part of this. Just like Cooper Bateman out of Salt Lake City, he wanted to know if he has what it takes to be able to compete with the best. If you don't want to put forth the effort...if you don't think you are the best there is...then go elsewhere and settle for second best. 'Bama doesn't want those types anyway.

The article says just two are walk-ons, so that means six are scholarship players. That is probably two too many.

This....

Not everyone will get to play in the NFL or NBA or MLB, but those that do have a chance will have to play for the best, against the best and their best....to do that means going to a Bama/Florida/OU/Texas/USC/tOSU etc. If not, then go where you can get a good education and get a chance to play....MAYBE you will get on a team that has a miracle run and get a NC...but maybe not.

Use the extra couple of schollys on some D-linemen to rotate in, and keep everybody fresh into the 4th Q.

3 is normal for scholarship. 4 is more than normal for us, but not excessive.

Honestly, we have had this discussion amongst the fans, too. Most of us are pretty sure we turned away some 4 star DLinemen and a lot of us felt like we shouldn't have taken another QB.

Pretty sure that Kylie Fitts wanted very badly to come play for us. And we had to tell him we couldn't. Also a pretty highly rated LB, as well, might have been able to come in.

Coach Saban is a better person than I on recruiting, though, and has done pretty well. Some were even saying we may have too many RBs. But, you never know. We had two RBs go down to season ending injuries this past year, so that we were feeling pretty slim after the top 3 or so.

This is funny on so many levels.

You're kidding me, right? Alabama has a very efficient offense that is designed to chew up clock and protect the defense, and Saban recruits specifically for that system. As such Alabama is not the place that QBs with NFL aspirations seek out. They will have a better chance at stardom and a better chance to display their NFL QB skills in someone else's system.

Sorry but I'm not buying the "come here to be the best and go to the NFL or go somewhere else and be second best" bravado.

If the young athlete wants a real shot at playing time during college (for most, this is the last hurrah), he should attend a school which gives him the best chance to get game time. For the greatest percentage coming out of high school, that isn't going to be Alabama. Even SEC-caliber players aren't going to get the best odds of playing on game day at Bama. The choice comes down to the best chance of playing on game day vs time on the practice squad against the first string starters and subs plus maybe getting a ring because your school team won a championship or bowl game during which you never even saw the turf for one play in game time. So, kid, how do you want to spend your four years of eligibility?

Walk-ons are different. Maybe the walk-on quarterbacks got some interest from a D-II school, or even a FCS program, but the student wanted to attend Bama. These players are focused more on their complete college experience and possibly legacy ties to Tuscaloosa. They are attending the school of their dreams or choice, and they decide to walk on to the football program for any shot at all of continuing their association with football during their university years. More power to 'em.

It doesn't matter what you are "not buying into." Everyone said the same thing about WRs a few years ago. Now Bama is sending them to the NFL and has arguably the best WR corps in the country. Same thing is happening at QB. QB play has gotten better every year. QB responsibility has increased every year with it. AJ is the most talented QB at Bama in years and the next crop should bring even a better QB (talent-wise). All of the traditional weaknesses of Bama's "system" are slowing becoming strengths. I agree that they have yet to produce a QB capable of starting as a rookie in the NFL under Saban, but AJ is a huge step toward that. Cooper Bateman (or one of the other ones for that matter) might be the breakout QB.

Of course, if your alma mater is an SEC school other than Bama, you want the Crimson Tide to be overcommitted on schollies to QBs, kickers, and long-snappers. You want them to be "thin" in o-lineman, or WRs, or TEs, or RBs, or DTs, or LBs, or CBs & Safeties. You want the Tide to be playing scrub players and walk-ons in key skill positions when your team has to face them on the field. You want those unforeseeable odds that Bama's going to be "wounded." You not anly want your team to have a real chance to beat them, you want the chance for a victory worthy of rememberance (Note: Only the Bammers will consistently harp for decades about the injuries that left Bama vulnerable. Your team's fans will simply crow about flushing the Tide.).
