Ex-Packers rip Holmgren for SB XXXII

There was a time, when the Packers were dominating the National Football League in the mid-1990s, general manager Ron Wolf and coach Mike Holmgren were viewed as an ideal combination. They were viewed as a template for organizational success. Now we learn Wolf primarily blames Holmgren for the Packers' loss to the Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII. Wolf said Holmgren was "pig-headed" in failing to adjust to the protection schemes to account for the Broncos' blitzes. In Wolf's view, Holmgren was aware of what needed to be done but didn't do it because he arrogantly believed in his own approach. Former Packers safety LeRoy Butler said Holmgren was more interested in "showing off" than making a simple fix that would have made a difference in the game.

So it wasn't the fact that the Bronocs outplayed them? I mentioned yesterday that I watched the NFL Films showing of that SB and I saw John Elway and company playing with their hearts on the field. Never heard of any controversy from the Packers side.

WTF, BACKLASH...

February 3, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Wow, after all these years we hear this now.

February 3, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Hey Wolf "get over it!"... you should do what most packerfans do and turn to booze to help with playoff game losses. Also, if not for Homgren, they would've never made the SB that year.

Revisionism at its best..

February 3, 2008  10:32 AM ET

Umm...where were these comments 10 years ago?

Oh yeah and how many times have the Packers been to the Super Bowl since then, in comparison to Holmgren?

Packers 0, Holmgren 1.

February 3, 2008  10:33 AM ET

why are we talkin about this now? the only 1 on the packers since then is brett farve i think, its done and over with, the broncos had a good team than, could the packers have beaten them? of course, but it nevr happened

Holmgren: "At least I got your ungrateful arses to the Superbowl. Lets hear you whine some blame McCarthy's way for choking in a home NFC Championship game."

February 3, 2008  10:59 AM ET

How about that even during the year the Packers did win the superbowl, the Broncos were the best team until they were upset by a hot jacksonville team, allowing Green Bay to win the superbowl. So I wasn't surprised that the Broncos beat them the next year. This is the type of crap stories that are routine in Wisconsin, because if you leave green bay , then you are a traitor for life. This is all they talk about all year, and the best they can come up with in the off season. They had a good year, lost to the giants, and are now making excuses in the past. If Holmgren wasn't the coach who brought his west coast scheme from the 49ers and got the most out of a young favre and getting reggie white, then they would have never won the superbowl in the first place. The reason they lost last time I checked was because they couldn't tackle terrell davis at all.

February 3, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Huh, I think every losing team could point to something they wish they had done differently. What has Wolf done without Holmgren?

February 3, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Haaa Haaa The Packers blew it!

February 3, 2008  11:58 AM ET

What is Wolf's point in bringing this up? Another typical ex-GM blowing hot air after the fact. Its history man...let it alone.

February 3, 2008  12:26 PM ET

KCMAC929 you don't know what you're talking about the Packers played the Broncos in week 13 in 1996 and beat them 41-6 and the game shouldn't have been that close. The Pack scored the most points in the NFL that season and allowed the least so NO WAY the Broncos were the best team in the NFL that year.

February 3, 2008  01:03 PM ET

Was this the same Super Bowl where Holmgren ADMITTED that he ...

LET the other team score ...

after he lost track of downs ...

THAT WERE CLEARLY INDICATED ON THE JUMBOTRON ABOVE HIS HEAD?

Terrell Davis was the difference in that game that's why he got MVP. The Broncos were just better than them on that day, blaming Holmgren now is really just pathetic.

February 3, 2008  01:21 PM ET

Remeber 3 weeks ago when people cared about Holmgren and the Packers?

Me either...

February 3, 2008  01:21 PM ET

I heard if you complain a decade later you actually get your Super Bowl rings...

February 3, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Too bad in Elway and a handful of starters didn't play in that 96 game. They did in 97 season and won a superbowl. Broncos were the best team from 96-98
