Hasselbeck bolts to the Colts

08:04 AM ET 03.19 | Matt Hasselbeck may be trading his shot at a starting job for his shot at a Super Bowl title. The veteran quarterback, released by the Tennessee Titans Monday, is already in discussions with the Indianapolis Colts and could soon agree to join the team as Andrew Luck's backup, according to a person informed of the offers made by the club. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the negotiations are ongoing. Though he's 37, Hasselbeck surely could find a spot that would allow him a better crack at a starting job. But obviously other factors are at play because Luck isn't losing his job anytime soon. Hasselbeck was scheduled to make $5.5 million in base salary from the Titans this season.

Yes, good move. Hasselbeck has reached the point in his career where is more of an elder statesman and mentor than he is a starting caliber player. He may have a few good games left in him if Luck has to sit out because of an injury, but he can be equally valuable in helping Luck develop.

Matt's pretty well known as a role model in Seattle. Not just for quarterbacking, but for life. If you saw Dilfer on a game broadcast last season talking about the impact Matt had in his life, you know what I'm talking about. Other players have said the same thing. Luck seems pretty together on his own, but this won't hurt. Matt's real value would be with a team with a talented young quarterback who has some growing up to do.
