Kraft: 'I don't answer to Tom Brady'

08:05 AM ET 03.19 | Very likely, Tom Brady is quite aware that it's Robert Kraft who writes the checks in New England. Brady had restructured his deal and took less than market value on an extension because he wanted the Patriots competitive for a championship and be able to sign the necessary players. [Wes Welker], of course, was Brady's favorite target and security blanket on the field. "I don't answer to Tom Brady," Kraft said. "He's an important member of the team and we've chatted. He did what he did to put us in the best position to build a team around him and win games. We've chatted about it." ... "He never put quid pro quos, and to be honest, we wouldn't have accepted them had he done that."

Herald can't have it it both ways. They'll note that Brady got more guaranteed money under his restructured deal and call him greedy. Then they turn around and claim Kraft has somehow double crossed Brady by not using the cap space to sign Welker.

Brady " took less than market value?"...really? Just stop with that nonsense. $57 million guaranteed. Regardless? for a very, very good QB who will be 40 when they are still paying him. That is a first in NFL guaranteed contract money. Good for him, but he is not stupid and he knows it was a whole lot more money guaranteed coming his way than he had coming his way before the restructure.

The Pats had plenty of opportunities to sign Welker before he hit free agency, they roll the dice on him and they lost.

I'm starting to think that owners should NOT be allowed to speak to the media. I know..I know, it's not going to happen. But, as smart as they must be to be in the financial positions that they are they sure say stupid, unnecessary things. Steelers and Giants have the smartest owners in football....you never hear them speak.

Kraft wants cover for the Welker break up with the fans. So he blames Welker and his agent. Welker says they offered a take it or leave deal, so he left it. I would say to sign a $6 million a year deal, Welker wanted out. Kraft just has to man up and tell everyone, hey, he did not want to be ere. Period.

It's unlike them to unravel at the seams over 1 player... All these years they yell, "it's the system". They shed players left and right over the years, and never seemed to miss a beat from a performance standpoint. If it is (the system), I just don't get all the fuss over one player.

I read where Welker's cap hit for the first year of his contract is only $4 million, but $8 million for the second year. He may be one and done with the Bronco's if that's the case.

Nothing to see here, mover along folks. The real show is further down south in the land of Ryanville and his buttfumble partner.

Really? Amazing how quickly "fans" can change...dude balled out for yall and THIS how you treat him after your team low-balled him?? Averages 112 catches a year and can't get rewarded? Thats a nice way to treat a VERY productive player.....how bout showing him some appreciation on the way out? Thats what a classy person would do
