08:13 AM ET 03.19 | On the surface, signing veteran catcher Chris Snyder could be considered a depth move, but there may be a more specific motivation. The Angels, clearly concerned over Hank Conger's recent throwing yips, have added another option for their backup job behind the plate. ... Snyder, who agreed to terms shortly after the Nationals released him and will report to Angels camp on Tuesday, can opt out of his contract if he isn't on the Major League roster by Opening Day. Chances are, he will be. But Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto, echoing the sentiments of skipper Mike Scioscia, continues to call the backup to Chris Iannetta an "open competition."

Is Conger the next Mackey Sasser?

Don't think...just throw. When I caught I would think about errant throws sometimes....like with men on base. I never soft tossed the ball anywhere and it made accuracy a whole lot easier. Throw the ball it's that simple.

The yips? He needs a belly putter.

this has been his whole problem for Conger every season, can't throw out runners, can't caught runners by any means, and now Conger its finding himself against the wall once again,,

Lets be realistic,Sciocia would use the catcher WHO can call the games without any hesitation,
Chris Iannetta hasn't proved at all to be a complete full time catcher untill now,
and IF he really try's to become a # catcher for the angels lineup? likely injuries are right behind him just like last year with a broken wrist bone!!

the back up catcher competition SHOULD and NEEDS to be ready in full motion towards been a regular catcher,,with the positive mentality and agressive approach behind the plate,, Iannetta will need to be better in the healthy issue better behind the plate,,,

Conger will be traded by mid-season,, can't catch but appears to be hitting better than other spring training though,,,
I wonder WHY? the halos didn't signed KOTTARAS at all? i mean this catcher its lefty plus he has a pop in his bat, he was able to hit 24 homeruns last season,,,KOTTARAS would had been a good fit in halos lineup,,,

Conger can't overcome the insecurity in his playing time, as soon he its placed behind the plate, he starts to lose control in his arm and forgets that he its a major part in the lineup,,Sciocia can't expect Conger to become a experienced catcher any more plus things aren't looking to good in the halos catching spot at all!!
