08:17 AM ET 03.19 | In Knoxville, Selection Sunday became Rejection Sunday, leading to more than a little frustration. Befuddled and baffled, Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin addressed the Knoxville media [Monday], still perplexed over a snub from the NCAA tournament selection committee. The Vols are on the outside looking in. ... Asked why the SEC received only received only three NCAA tournament bids, Martin shook his head. "I wish I knew," he replied. "It's unfortunate. I would say a lack of respect more than anything. When you have a second-place team at this level (Kentucky and Alabama finished second), it's almost like a mid-major mentality in this league. When your second-place team doesn't get in the NCAA tournament -- this is a BCS league, it's one of the best [leagues] in the country -- that just shouldn't happen."

Love this guy, and wish him well. Also and SEC homer, but come-on man, "one of the best leagues in the country"?!? Um......no, not this year.

Was he speaking about football or basketball? Just because you are on top in football that does not automatically cover you in basketball.

this is a BCS league

No - it's a basketball season.

Because you should have been 0-3 against a bad Alabama team. The only win coming because of an obvious blown call late in the game that you won.

Not sure what he was watching this season, but the SEC was pretty bad this year, outside of UF.

Other than Kentucky basketball is irrevelant in the SEC. The top sports are football and spring football.

Ok...and mid-majors frequently get the shaft in football. The shoe is on the other foot, live with it. Nobody really wants to see a mid-level team from a weak 'power conference' in basketball. In football it's a completely different story...so ya win some, ya lose some.

The "snubs" don't seem to be an issue during football season though.

SEC. Football conference.

March 19, 2013  12:59 PM ET

history says the teams from the "big" conferences that don't get the auto-bid or win the conference but make it in as a lower seed don't perform as well as the mid-majors who make it in

You have forgotten about Florida. 6 Sweet Sixteens, 5 Elite Eights, 3 Final Fours, 3 Nat'l title appearances, and 2 National Titles since 2000.

Kentucky has 7 Sweet Sixteens, 5 Elite Eights, 2 Final Fours, 1 Nat'l Title appearance, and 1 National Title since 2000.
