Cheveldayoff can see a selloff

08:23 AM ET 03.19 | Lining some teams up on the buying or selling side is easy, but, for a team like the Jets, the position remains complicated. If they fall out [of the playoff race], all bets are off. Which brings us to to the possibility of a selloff. With seven players due to become unrestricted free agents in the summer, there's a threat of losing them all without receiving anything in return. That would be bad management. So if the Jets are out of the running, expect [Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff] to dangle Ron Hainsey and Nik Antropov, probably his two most tradeable UFA's. But what if Winnipeg remains in the hunt -- does that automatically preclude Cheveldayoff unloading one? "It doesn't preclude it," the GM said.

They'll be happy to have those two off the books...

But they sorely miss Alexei Ponikorovski, and were really hoping to find a way to get Stajan and Nik Hagman in the lineup before the end of the season, along with finding what iceberg Vesa Toskala has been hiding behind and getting him to compete with Pavelec for the starting job.

even if the make it in...this team is far from legit. Any move that they make should be based on the future, not on the immediate. If they get in it's only because the lock-out has effected teams in different ways...

Or the ridiculous...division winner gets the third seed even if teams 4 thru 8 have more points than them!

yep...but at the moment they're in on their own merit, and they get to feast on their terrible division, so it's not out of line to think that they could make 7th or 8th on their own.

Which is why I hope TOR could miraculously hold onto the #6 position.

That would be bad management.

And picking up Olli Jokinen wasn't?

March 19, 2013  09:05 AM ET

Yes they need to get Antropov and Ron off the books but they also need to look towards the future which may be this year. They might sneak into the playoffs as the 8th seed in an incredibly weak division which is ravaged by injuries, that is not cause to sell off a bunch of young guys and early round picks or they could hold tight and try to get another piece. The Jets plan should be to build through the draft and become buyers if they are to become a Stanley Cup contender, not a contender to squeak into the playoffs. Just remember they are moving to a division with Chicago, Minnesota, etc. next year and in for a rude awakening. It may behoove them to keep some picks and young players and attempt to develop them so they can keep up with those guys instead of prematurely selling the farm. So in the end is it worth it to trade away all your UFA for picks or nego. with them and develop what you got. They can still get the 8th seed.

I'm curious as to why we're discussing the Jets when the Laffs have exactly the same record?

That leaf on the Jets jersey must be throwing people off...

The Jets Fans are top tier when it comes to crowd chants during games. Lets Go Blue Jays being a recent gem.

i think we all do. getting to play in a pathetically weak division should be sufficient reward. if you can't make it on your own then too bad.

I just don't get why Winnipeg sees themselves as sellers, unless it's just to unload cap issues... They are topping the SE Division (along with my 'Canes), I just don't get it...

Do they think they will drop off the map later on?

tough call. If this were a regular season, you'd wonder if they had the horses...but it's a short one...

By the way, your homeland put on a great F1 race over the weekend. i really enjoyed it

"Cheveldayoff can see a selloff."

Ahhhh, yes. The reality that he's no longer in Chicago is finally beginning to sink in!

The Wings will take Zach Bogosian and Dustin Byfuglien please.

they play in an awful division. look at the teams below them, there are plenty of teams with much better rosters that should be ahead of them.

I don't think that I am making the argument that they have an unfair advantage...just pointing out that in an 82 games season they are probably on the outside looknig in.

Making the playoffs this year shouldn't be taken as a 'sign'...they have to build smart. Remember what happened when Burkie decided to jump the gun because he overplayed (and poorly evaluated) his hand?
