Dusty: Reds speedy prospect has 'a lot' to learn

08:11 AM ET 03.20 | In addition to righty Drew Hayes, the Reds reassigned outfielder Billy Hamilton on Tuesday. Hamilton, the team's top prospect, played in 12 games for the big-league team this spring, hitting .174 with a .240 on-base percentage. ... "He's got to go play," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "There's a lot he has to learn. People are enamored by speed -- all of us are. But, he hasn't been switch-hitting that long. You see his record here in spring training, he hasn't been doing real well here. For a guy with speed, he's been striking out too much. But we had him come here to see where his development is and where he is and realize that he has some ways to go. If he didn't, he'd be here already."

It was good for the Reds to invite him to camp and see what he can do. Billy is a burner, but in Double A last year the fast ball didn't move that much, and the curve ball didn't either.

In his very best years, Vince had a very decent OBP and was valuable. Too bad he was too big of an idiot to stay on that track.

wiseup: Like the old saying,You can't steal first base. When Hamilton can hit.265 or higher and be diciplined at the plate and work more walks to have an obp of .365 or higher he could make some contributions at ML level. Probably 2 years away from ML ready. by then there might be an outfield spot for him. Ludwicks contract will be up after 2014 season.

Technically, you can steal first base.

wiseup: only 2 ways you can get to first base without a hit, walk, or HBP. That is a PB or WP on a third stike, or catchers interference. these are not classified as a SB.

After researching a bit more, you are correct. Those aren't classified as stolen bases.
However, it does look like someone stole first base once in history. Germany Schaefer stole first base when he was on second, trying to confuse the catcher so the runner on third could score. Seriously.

wiseup: I never heard of that. however he probably reached reached base with a hit or a walk or HBP. or one of the other two listed previously.

wiseup: I thought of a third way you can get to first base with out a hit walk or HBP. That is by reaching first base on an error.
