The next $10M man

08:23 AM ET 03.20 | At some point, the $10-million player will return to the NHL. What the recent extensions to Anaheim Ducks forwards Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf underscored more than anything is that top free agents -- or, in this case, pending free agents -- should be able to command higher salary cap hits in a system that includes term limits on contracts. ... And it likely won't be long before they're bumped down the list. In fact, this summer will probably see a NHL player sign a deal that averages at least $10 million per season for the first time in roughly a decade. Pittsburgh Penguins centre Evgeni Malkin should be able to command that type of money when negotiations begin on an extension that will start in 2014.

Malkin, if he wants to stay, will demand a contract similar if not the exact same to Crosby's.
I like Kessel, but no thanks.

Malkin is hurt way too frequently. Who does he think he is, anyway? Rick DiPietro?

First off: Happy Birthday Mr. Bobby Orr. Top 5 all time defensemen and we could argue that he may be one of the top 5 of all time as far as pure skaters goes. Now as far as who is due 10M a year goes you have to start with Malkin becuase he is up first and will blow by Crosby's 8.7M a yr mark and get 10+ but I think in 2 years yo will see the first avg 12M man with Towes, Kane and Stamkos all UFA in 2 to 3 years. My problem with that is not all markets can accept contracts like that and if the salary cap keeps popping up up up then I see Teams like Toronto and Montreal dominating the market overthe next decade.

A few good points.
As far a #4, I think he is top 5 all time players. Maybe only second to Gretzky. It's a damn shame his knees couldn't hold up. Happy Birthday to my favorite Oshawa General.
Secondly, I think teams like New York and Toronto proved in the pre-cap era that over-spending guarantees absolutely nothing.

Don't even joke about something like that. Like DWI said he'll be asking for a contract like Sid's. If he's looking for $10 million it will probably be with another team.

crosby's under contract till 2025. lol. I hadn't realized that it was that long.
Malkin at that price is reasonable.

I wouldn't agree with way too frequently. Tyler Myers falling on his leg wasn't his fault, and the current situation with the JVR hit after his boards whiplash was also a freak thing.
That said I agree with DWI the Pens aren't going to pay him more than Crosby.

that's just about the only thing Myers is good for...

I think Malkin will ask for the 10M. Crosby took the Mario discount which Evgeni is not going to do. I believe Pens give it to him and there will be a no trade clause added. That means if they were to enter a dream world of trying to keep thier core together they would have to roll 2 lines of AHL players and a 2 lines of players making 5+M a year. Remeber Orpik, Letang and Kunitz will also have thier hand out with Malkin and the following year its Paul Martin who is already 5M +
