NFL owners eliminate tuck rule

01:39 PM ET 03.20 | NFL owners voted to eliminate the tuck rule Wednesday, and the rule was "overwhelmingly" eliminated, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The tuck rule came into the public eye, and will forever live in NFL lore, because of the 2002 Divisional playoff game between the New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was hit by Charles Woodson, causing him to fumble. The play, however, was reviewed, and referee Walt Coleman invoked the tuck rule, which called the play an incomplete pass, letting the Patriots keep possession of the ball. New England went on to win that game and three of the next four Super Bowls.

Good move. Stupid rule to begin with.

Because the Pats/Raiders game is now in the distant past which makes the change more palatable. Someone thought it was a good rule at one time. Can't imagine why, but someone did.

Don't worry, they got over the rule disallowing snow removal for place kickers just fine. They'll be able to carry on OK.

My initial reaction was "good, this was a stupid rule in the first place." My second reaction is "what equally inane rule will they replace it with?"

Pats fan here. Terrible rule and I feel a little sorry for the Raiders because of said Tuck rule.

Some calls are bad and go for you, some against. It was a bad call that the league did not want to recognize at the time so they invoke a new rule to cover a bad call, they knew it all along, but that is how it is done. Time passes and they make a new rule to get rid of the ruse rule. That is all. The alternative was to say, hey , we got it wrong. sorry. Our bad.

For a minute there I thought the owners were referring to 'Tucks'. I thought there was a rule all the owners had to use the product if their hemorrhoids flared up!!
