Lupul facing supplementary discipline

08:18 AM ET 03.21 | At the very least, many of the NHL's GMs had some talking points while taking in Lightning-Leafs in Toronto on Wednesday. There were just so many subplots to a game that also had the backdrop of the annual March general managers meeting during the day at the neighbouring NHL offices in Toronto. ... What they saw early in the third period was Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul nail Lightning defenceman Victor Hedman with a blindside hit to the head just outside Toronto's blue-line. Lupul received a two-minute penalty for an illegal check to the head. But the hit appeared nasty enough that NHL chief disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan may follow up with some supplementary discipline before the Maple Leafs visit the Sabres.

saw the hit...meh. dirty, but nothing to really get worked up about. Hedman was clearly dazed by the hit, but then he added some to it by staying on the ice, unclipping his helmet, wiping his face. He was looking to milk it for what it was worth.

At that point they were still down by 3 goals, and he knew Lupul wouldn't get more than 2 for what was, overall, not that bad of a hit. He went high, but he didn't go headhunting like some are making it out.
Just sucks that he'll probably wind up missing at least one of the Boston games, making getting any kind of point out of those even less likely.

I agree with this assessment.

I think Hedman led with the crown of the helmet, and deserved 15 yards.
Oops, wrong sport.

The hit was dodgy, sure, but wasn't Hedman trying for a best actor award too?
Shanahan will likely cream his daks again, and suspend for 5 games, just on idiotic principle.

This head shot was so blatant it's sure to end up on the league's how-not-to video compilation.
Lets make a check list and see if this was a BS hit.
Was the hit late? Check.
Was the head the principal point of contact? Check.
Did his skates leave the ice prior to the hit? Double Check.
The only thing Lupul can state is that Hedman did return but in the end I think he'll get 2 maybe 3 games for the hit. Lastly Lupul may have wanted to pay attention to who was in the building last night: It's probably best not to knock the block off an opponent when Gary Bettman, Colin Campbell and half of the NHL's heirarchy are in the building. Just saying.....

Here's the rub though, I don't think Bettman can see over anyone's head... let alone be bothered to watch the product he artfully attemted to ruin just a few short months ago...
I still say he'll get 5 games (not for deserving it, even though yes, the hit was dodgy, as I said previously), but I think ol' Shanny is stuck on the number 5....

I have been told that during the game Bettman was standing on a 3' step stool while wearing 8" platform shoes and that he was barely able to see the hit while watching from behind Campbell but that he did see hit, afterwards he asked Colin for help down and if he was allowed an ice cream cone. Colin told him he could but only after Gary asked Fehr for permission first.

Did the refs futz up another one like they did with PK Chelios 2 nights ago and Kronwall last night?

Come on Danny, if it was any higher it would have missed.

Using your checklist, then why is Ovie not suspended? Ever. He does this at least once a game.

Hedman's five inches taller. Anyone with that size disadvantage has to get a little higher. He just got too high. If he misses a game or two, he misses a game or two. This isn't what people mean when they talk about headhunting needing to be eliminated.

Yup. The one that never made any contact.
Ditto for Kronwall yesterday. Big hit, no stick contact but he gets 4 minutes for high sticking?

Looked like an accident to this guy...clean hit but he flung his stick wildly.
