08:19 AM ET 03.21 | My, my, how times have changed. People actually greatly misunderstand what the NHL trading deadline means any more. Once upon a time, teams used it to bolster their lineups for the stretch drive and beyond, in the hopes that there was a Butch Goring out there that could help them get over the top and win a Stanley Cup. Nowadays, the trading deadline is all about providing content for cable sports shows and newspaper websites. Dozens of trades occur annually and rarely do of them have any tangible bearing on the outcome of the playoffs. And this year, it'll be worse than ever. Q: Worse than ever because? A: Because, in a 48-game season, so many teams consider themselves genuinely in the hunt for a playoff spot.

how would that make it worse than ever? If everybody considers themselves a contender then you have fewer sellers. We'll see what happens in the market, but I expect it to be pretty quiet.

All 3 times the Pens won a cup they made deadline trades that got them over the hump and played major parts in ther cup wins. Of course they made some deadline trades in years they failed to win a cup too, so maybe it's a wash.

But it's hardly a useless deadline unlike the NFL trade deadline where hardly anybody ever changes teams.

exactly. Guys like Iggy and Morrow might not be what they once were...but these guys are definitely in play and they can definitely make a big difference.

I imagine there will be a few moves, not many, like a D-man here, and maybe a depth forward there, but I doubt (and I say this with trepidation) there will be many, if any, blockbuster trades before the deadline.

I may be proven wrong, but this year is different, because (cue the cliche) it's a sprint instead of the normal marathon. However. I just don't see it.

I feel with such a deep draft this year, we will see alot of trading going on. Teams that are 8th seeds that need to keep the home crowd happy (Jets) will make deals. Look at the players that will or may be on the move. Bouwmeester,Boyes,Boyle,Cammalleri,Iginla,Lunogo,Ribeiro,Perry,Gonchar,Mor row. The blackhawks are looking for a center. Dogs and Cats playing in the streets together.... Boring trade deadline, I think Not
