Jimmy angers '72 Dolphins

Members of the 1972 Dolphins are sensitive to perceived slights. That especially is so when they come from Jimmy Johnson, who, after replacing Don Shula as coach in January 1996, said, ``I could care less about the past.'' Now prominent members of the 17-0 Dolphins are spewing insults at J.J. after a comment they found objectionable. Johnson, a studio analyst on Fox's Super Bowl telecast, told reporters on a conference call that if the Patriots win, ``I don't think anybody is close to them as far as the greatest coaching job and the greatest team that's played the game. . . . Nobody, including the Dolphins, can ever say they accomplished what the Patriots will have accomplished if they [finish] 19-0.''

Well Jimmy is right so those grumpy old dolphins should go back to the retirement home suck up their cocoa and SHUT UP. They atready had their moment, now let the Pats(if they win) have theirs!

Last time I checked 19-0 is better than 17-0

Last time I checked the Dolphins routinely won by 3 points

Last time I checked the Dolphins had a weak schedule, sub-.500 even

Last time I checked Mercury Morris and Don Shula are still bitter old men who can never let go

I hope the Pats win today and make history. Keep in mind that besides their perfect season in 1972, during that time frame the Dolphins went 3 seasons and lost less than 10 games. If I'm wrong here, somebody correct me. BOTH teams are, and were legendary....

February 3, 2008  09:27 AM ET

I guess that could be seen as a way to stick it to Shula once more. Good job Jimmy. Now you just have to put some ex-lax in their Ensure and you have a trifecta.

I don't think you can say that what the Patriots have done is better than what the Dolphins did. You don't think the Dolphins would have won 2 more regular season games that year if they played 16 games?

The Dolphins also didn't routinely win by 3 points. In fact, only TWICE did the Dolphins win by 3 points or less. I'm not sure where you got that fact from. The Dolphins won 11 games that season by 10 points or more, including a 52-0 win against New England. So, you can say safely say that the Dolphins routinely won by 10 points or more.

Also, it should be noted that the Dolphins had to go on the ROAD for the AFC Championship game against the Steelers. Not a very easy place to play.

If the Patriots win today, I think they are in the same category as the Dolphins. They are the only two teams with perfect seasons. They are from different eras, with different circumstances, and different adversities.

February 3, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Hes right. Look at the Patriots schedule this year, they played 6 playoff teams in the Regular season. The 72 Dolphins played 0. The Pats blew teams out, the Dolphins didnt. Its not even close, were one win away from seeing the greatest team to ever play football.

the 7 Dolphins need to let it go, they need to get off thier high horse and accpet that thier feat is repeatable and is bound to happen again, even if the Pats lose today

Stats are stats, two more wins are two more wins...

Patriots 42- Yankees with Pads on 14..

February 3, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Scheduling is tougher these days (except for the Cowboys for some reason).

" You are what your record says you are."...Parcells
If the Pats win today, then that is that. I do not understand the problem, it does not take a thing away from the Dolphins..All things in their time..

February 3, 2008  10:31 AM ET

What perceived slight?!?!? The man is paid to have an opinion. If it isn't exactly the same as yours, does that mean he's slighting you? Let it go, Grumpy Old Men!

Were you even alive back then? Because I was and I saw some off the greatest football ever to be played.

February 3, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Havent the players from the 72 Dolphins died off yet? They squeak louder than their rocking chairs.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. Three Rivers in the 70's was a madhouse. I a good way of course. Not like the hooligans they have now a days in most stadiums. It was a loud, rollicking place to play. Just about every corner of the stadium had some sort of player's army.

February 3, 2008  10:49 AM ET

No Dolphins 13, there are already in a class of their own. That 72 dolphins team wasn't even the best team before this year. 85 bears, 84 and 89 49ers, and probably handful of other teams could have wiped the floor with that team. The only reason I wanted the Patriots to go undefeated all year was to stop the champagne celebrations and to shut up Shula and especially Mercury Morris. THat moron deserves no more press time. This Patriot team is in it's own class.

February 3, 2008  10:50 AM ET

The '72 Giants are lately coming out as whiners and crybabies over their legacy. They just don't seem to realize that records are made to be broken. Dolphins then, maybe Patriots this year, someone else another time......it's just a record. They should enjoy the one record that can't be disputed....they did it first.

February 3, 2008  10:51 AM ET

the league wasa joke back then...
Actually it was better. You could smack QBs around like anybody else and beat the snot out of receivers all the way down the field, lineman would do the two handed head slap as a technique ( perfectly legal)...I miss it. The game has gone soft on the rough stuff, so now we just get dirty play when they get frustrated..Don't tell Butkus it was a lousy game back then...lol.

Excuse me? The defending NFC Champs. The current AFC Champs and possible SB winners. The entire NFC East which is tougher than most every other division in the NFL regardless of record. The entire NFC North. Aforementioned Bears, the Packers, Detroit (who played well). And we didn't have a tough schedule? What do you consider tough?

Sorry, I meant '72 Dolphins.
