Halladay could sink the Phillies

08:11 AM ET 03.22 | Just how much stock should one put into Roy Halladay's rocky spring? Start with this: As Roy Halladay goes, so go the Phillies. There's no way to ignore Halladay's disappointing spring. Phillies officials, including manager Charlie Manuel, are attempting to put a positive spin on Doc's problems. There have been whispers that he's hurt, as evidenced by his fastball velocity, which has hovered in the 85- to 88-mph range. Doc works so hard, drives himself unmercifully and is the last person who'll admit something's wrong. Maybe the wear and tear on his right arm has finally taken its toll. ... [If] Doc cannot give the Phillies at least 15 wins, they can probably forget about the postseason. He's that important to this team.

If this guy is what dictates if the Phillies go to the playoffs or not, I guess it's safer than not to say they gone.

I guess it's a good thing the 15 win number is complete ****. As long as he can keep his ERA under 4, I like their chances.

Lee and Hamels are more tied to their chances if you ask me.

They have alot bigger problems than Halladay. He doesn't dictate the season. The biggest problem is the ages. I think 5-10 of them will be eligible for social security in a couple of years.

....i have been speaking truth about the not-so big 3-anymore (philly, red sux and yanks) going down after continued post-roid dependency on expensive old players who no longer can juice....and now we have it...(angels, tigers and dodgers however must not have got the memo....they are next)....but stupid phillies sign young...at least yanks and red sux are trying to turn the ship around.....

It's hard to judge his performances this spring. I have seen them all and he looked okay his first 2 outings. He hit about 90 on the gun. Then he had a terrible outing against the Tigers and then supposedly got a virus. This is what the Phillies said last year. They were not forthcoming with his injury until he was put on IR. Seems like deja vu all over again. If that's the case, then they better hope Aaron Cook can win 14 games.....

the phillies will be in the playoffs, with halladay or no halladay, why? because halladay could and should be used as a long reliever doing 3 to 4 innings of work and getting the w's without any problem,,,

as i stated before,,,this pitcher should be used as a long term reliever, or perhaps as a one inning reliever in the phillies bullpen after all nothing wrong with that!!!

The best things about Doc are his work ethic and his will and I want to say that I hope these traits can carry him through to a level of performance that he's played at for years. It doesn't really concern me so much when a guy like him struggles in spring training. What does concern me is the amount of velocity he's lost if the above is true. Tough to survive in that 85 to 88 mph range.

Yeah, but your lineup suffered for it.

The good news Phillie fans is it looks like he will not pitch enough to command another $20 million next year with the vesting option in his contract.

Phillies will need to be dealing Lee and a few others this summer. They are old and brittle. Trade some of these guys while they have a little value.

Don't want to believe that Halliday is nearing the end. Hope he can right the ship. This man is a beast. Look at his stats with the Jays. He put up those numbers against two 200 million dollar teams(sox and yanks, in case you did't know) all the while pitching in a homerun park during all contest with these two teams. If anyone can reestablish himself, it's the Doc. Even if he has lost velocity, he'll find a way to be effective.
Over the years, my brain has been programmed to not doubt this man and his abilities.

What old juicers does Detroit have on their roster? Yeah, Fielder's contract may cause issues, but I hardly think they deserve to be included with the Dodgers and Angels.
