08:13 AM ET 03.22 | Major League Baseball may be working on a new "out pitch" of sorts. Limited by their inability to compel people to cooperate with their investigators, [MLB] officials will open a new front in their battle against doping. They plan to file a lawsuit on Friday against a number of people connected to a South Florida anti-aging clinic, alleging that the individuals damaged the sport by providing some of the game's biggest stars with performance-enhancing drugs, according to two people briefed on the matter. The suit will seek to recoup money from its targets -- including the clinic's owner and a person who worked for two prominent baseball agents -- and baseball officials also hope it will produce cooperation with their investigation into the clinic's activities.

With that picture of Bud Selig looking like the Crypt Keeper, it wouldn't have surprised me if the lawsuit had been for breach of contract.

It certainly would break new ground and is worth watching how the courts decide, i.e., letting MLB continue with the suit or patently dismiss it as meritless.
If allowed to continue, then, MLB, essentially, would now have subpoena power, whereas previously, as an independent nonlegal body, they had none. Certain people would not like that ability to be used by MLB.
I, for one, would like to see who gets real nervous if this suit is allowed to go forward and who might approach MLB lawyers with an eye towards damage control.

Without going into detail Bud "The Nutty Professor" Selig has done some damn stupid things but on the other hand (besides five fingers) he has also led MLB into a period of great, and ever expanding, wealth.
For better, or for worse, that is a notable accomplishment as at one point MLB was an organization in financial turmoil with some franchises in danger of going belly up.
