08:29 AM ET 03.23 | Whatever little hope Mets fans had of seeing Johan Santana break camp with the team was dashed with the team's announcement on Friday that the lefty is just not ready. With eight days remaining in spring training, Santana, with a weak shoulder, still is not pitching off a mound. He will stay in Florida when the Mets head north. "Where he is at long-toss wise, he's not going to pitch," Terry Collins said. "He's not where he needs to be in his long-toss program, so even if it's next week, he's not going to open with us. He's going to have to get himself ready. ... I'll monitor it by phone." The announcement came as no surprise, but the team is not ready to go a step further and say the two-time Cy Young Award winner will begin the season on the disabled list.

Mets officially eliminated from the post season?

I think you can pretty much assume that every year about this time (March 23rd).

They should give them a dispensation and let them bring up the September call ups now.

Why would you want to mentally damage those younger players this soon?

This was as no brained for the penny pinching Mets....now he won't come anywhere near his innings pitched clause for the $25mil option. Right now none of the below matters except for his innings pitched this year......good bye Johan.....

2014 club option becomes player option if Santana:
Wins Cy Young award from 2008-13 and finishes second or third in the Cy Young vote in one other season
Ranks second or third in Cy Young vote in any 3 seasons, 2008-13
Is on the active roster for the final 30 days of 2013 season, and:
Pitches 215 innings in 2013, or Pitches 420 innings in 2012-13, or Pitches 630 innings in 2011-13
