10:38 AM ET 03.24 | The Lightning have fired head coach Guy Boucher less than three years into the his tenure behind the bench. Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman made the announcement early Sunday morning. Assistant coaches Dan LaCroix and Martin Raymond will run the bench for the Lightning's game Sunday night in Winnipeg. The top early candidates to replace Boucher include long time Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff, who was fired by the Sabres earlier this season, and Jon Cooper, who led Tampa Bay's American Hockey League affiliate to a Calder cup Championship last season. With 17 games remaining in this season the Lightning sit in 14th place in the Eastern Conference with a 13-17-1 record, five points out of a playoff position. But since starting the season 6-1, Tampa Bay has stumbled to a 7-16-1 record that started many to wonder if a change was needed to help turn the team's fortunes around. That change came on Sunday.

Nice!!!

Something had to be done. I would've thought for all their talent, the Bolts should be in a better position right now.

Perhaps if Yzerman gave him a goalie to work with he'd have had a little more success.

This is a team that has never been known to play a tight forechecking, disciplined, defensive type of game. Their play can look pretty ragged at times and they don't have the kind of goaltending that can cover for their mistakes night in and night out.

When he first came to the NHL he was defense first and everybody hated it!

Did take the Bolts to game 7 of the conference finals...but in the first round they played the Pens with no Crosby or Malkin.

People felt that he was responsible for the defensive downward spiral that had occurred in the QMJHL...he didn't allow his players to open up offensively and the people felt that he was killing the game.

They were happy to see him hired in the NHL.

Since winning the Cup in '04' they have only had one season where they scored more goals than they gave up, and that was only a +7 back in '10-11'.

I'm not going to gloat and say "I told you so!" (:-) But, I was excoriated by more than a few at that time when I expressed my doubts about him being ready for prime time. He did well for a while because every new broom sweeps well for a while but, it's the old ones that know the corners. Guy Boucher is Steve Y's first big mistake as a new GM.
