Denny Hamlin suffered broken back during crash

05:19 PM ET 03.25 | Denny Hamlin has been diagnosed with a fractured back -- more specifically an L1 compression fracture. After racing hard for the win with Joey Logano, who he was already having issues with, the two wrecked, handing the win to Kyle Busch. Hamlin went spinning toward the infield and hit a concrete wall head on sending his car airborne before slamming back down on the ground. The wall was not a safer barrier which is most likely why Denny suffered this injury. Will Power had a similar injury back in 2011 during the tragic crash that killed Dan Wheldon. It took him just under a month to recover from it. There is no word yet if Denny will need surgery or if he will actually miss races but I'm assuming he will miss one or two. Joey Logano, who was unaware that Hamlin was injured, said, "he got what he deserved" soon after the wreck. This feud has turned into a rivalry -- a very ugly one at that. There is no turning back now and saying I'm sorry; the damage is done. Hamlin recently tweeted one short sentence saying "I just want to go home." He then tweeted a picture of himself in the hospital.

Will Power broke several vertebrae in his lower back in a 2009 crash during practice at Sonoma and missed that event and the final three races of the season. He couldn't train for two months and wore a back brace for almost four months.

He also suffered a compression fracture of his fourth thoracic vertebra in the 2011 season finale at Las Vegas but missed no racing as he healed during the offseason.

Justin Wilson fractured his fifth thoracic vertebra in 2011 and missed the last six races of the season. Wilson said he was in a back brace for 10 weeks.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti fractured the L1 vertebra in his back in a 2003 motorcycle accident. He needed surgery and was out of a race car for almost nine months.

In NASCAR, Sterling Marlin missed the last seven races of the 2002 season with a fractured vertebra in his neck.

unfortunately i think he's going to be out of the car for a while.. i'm sure vickers or sadler will get the ride until hes ready

@jeff_gluck
Hamlin was wearing a back brace and was having trouble breathing. His injury has made it very difficult to breathe. More coming soon.

Don't like Hamlin one bit, But I SURE don't want to see any driver get hurt, I had a similar accident and your right SVT, was real tough to breath, hope he recovers well so he can take care of the snot thats got a big mouth.

There's some bad blood out there on the track at the same time.

I hope that that scumball pampers is proud of himself and that pile of trash call it raceing.BS he ran him into the wall like the little boy that he is.He will pay for his drity driveing because someone will get him back big time.For those who feel that pampers did do anything wrong are just as bad as pampers.I just hope and pray that Danny Hamlin will get better.

I think that Sliced Bread is going to be dealt with. Smoke is not the kind that turns the other check. It will be interesting to see if Kenseth or Stenhouse, Jr. stick up for their teammate. Martinsville should get pretty interesting.

Dislike Hamlin a lot.....but would never wish this on him or any other driver.......I hopo he fully recovers from this and is not left with lingering back issues.

.I am disappointed that Penske is defending Logano, by saying that it was just a racing thing......it was definitely NOT just a racing thing.......the bumping beforehand was....but the last push was intentional.....Logano was not loose or having any car issues that would cause him to slide up into Hamlin.

An owner should never throw his driver under the bus.......but Penske should watch his comments.....especially when his driver caused a serious injury to another driver..

Tony may or may not wait for his own payback....but Martinsville will still be extra interesting.

Tuesday is usually "Fine Announcement Day" for Nascar......I'm curious to see what Nascar does about this.

California had more empty seats than full. Bristol was like a Rays game in Floriday, empty seats. NASCAR is quite full of crap and their silence here mirrors Penske's petulant panderings. The good ol' boys have been weaselized and the product sucks. The racing that the bloated announcement crew described was visually boring. The fact that the two leaders of the race were so negligent that they ended the race snagged at the end points to the very average skills of the current breed. Indy Car is dying and NASCAR will follow suit unless they wise-up. Killing two contentious competitors to tout interest is beyond cheap. The governing body needs to be cleaned out and some new blood needs to run the sport or this mockery of sport will be gone in five years.

Hope Denny gets better.. Logano is just wrong here.. even after he heard that Hamlin was taken to the hospital.. he was heard in an interview saying that he wasn't going to Hamlin win that race.. Logano was so wrapped up in that is why Kyle won the race .. if he would have kept his focus on trying to win the race instead of trying not to let Hamlin win.. things might have turned out different

WHAT --- NOW WE DON'T ALLOW "CAGE RATTLING"?

logano tried to wreck hamlin on the lap before, he tried to hook him in the left rear but missed.. so he went ahead and finished what he started..

it was definitely NOT a racing incident as others have said

Bet Auto Club Speedway will now change all the walls to safer barrier. I think all the tracks should have them everywhere. I believe it would have made a difference in this case.

March 26, 2013  07:12 PM ET

Never was a fan of either one of those guys and it's terrible that hamlin got hurt on the deal. Don't think it was just racing but I also don't think Logano intended any harm at all. If he had it to do over he would do things differently. Kind of liked Tony but after his rants Sunday, that's over. He was barking about the kid and he is the worst one as far as that blocking and crunching his way through.

March 26, 2013  08:01 PM ET

If I were a betting man, I'd bet the 22 won't be crossing the finish line at the end while running Martinsville........

March 26, 2013  09:57 PM ET

@dennyhamlin 3m
I wish I got good news today.. I didn't.

March 26, 2013  10:02 PM ET

LOL........if only the car gets damaged then one can look at it as just "CAGE RATTLING.......but if the driver gets damaged, then it cannot be looked at so lightly.
