Teague's ties hint at a Gophers hire

08:19 AM ET 03.26 | Though Norwood Teague could have saved millions by relieving Tubby Smith of his duties a year earlier, he's at some peace with the decision. "Any time you spend money for buyouts it bothers me, as well, just like it bothers citizens of Minnesota," Teague said [Monday]. ... Coaches at the top of the search list would include Shaka Smart and Anthony Grant -- both of whom worked for Teague at VCU. Smart is still the coach at VCU, while Grant is the head coach now at Alabama. Brad Stevens, who took Butler to back-to-back NCAA title games, also has a good relationship with Teague. Buzz Williams (Marquette), Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State) and Jay Wright (Villanova) are other names to watch. Former Wolves coach Flip Saunders, a U of M alum, would also be a candidate.

Believe it or not, he might have a better chance of luring away Grant from Alabama rather than Smart from VCU. Grant's starting to wear out his welcome at The Capstone (expectation-wise), and he may be looking to jump before he gets pushed.

Goodbye, Tubby and goodbye back-ground blonde. Not sure what I'll have to look forward to when (if) Minnisota gets a thread in the future!

End of an era, kinda like ole #89 schnizzling Neuheisel @ UCLA football threads. That was lost forever when Mora was hired.

At least we still have the baby-blue blazer for Gump threads........oh, the good-old-days!

QUOTE(#5):

No more coattails for Tubby to ride. I like the new AD for the Gophers. He'd given Tubby a short leash since he was hired last year, and never waffled. He told the Regents and the school president that he was going to make his own hire, rather than use a search firm.... sounds like he's been ready to make a move for awhile.

I got to disagree Twins, a buyout for a coach who got his team to the tourney is stupid IMO. Especially since the AD gave him an extension that is now costing the school a cool Mil.

Maybe they already have a coach lined up. IF not then the AD and Prez are door knob humpers, who wants to coach at a school without a decent recruiting base and a school where NCAA tourney and one win get you fired.
