Miami Dolphins closing in on Dwight Freeney

07:58 PM ET 03.26 | The Miami Dolphins swung and missed with free agent defensive end Elvis Dumervil, but they're not done searching for someone to put on the end of their line. According to Adam Schefter on NFL Live, the Dolphins have some interest in signing the former Colts pass rusher after missing out on both Osi Umenyiora and Dumervil this offseason. Miami splurged on offensive weapons this year, adding over $100 million in talent, but the defensive side of the ball -- a side that was arguably worse than the offense last season -- remain largely untouched. Many believe the Dolphins will look to the draft to shore up holes on defense, but there is a need of a true veteran presence and Freeney embodies that exactly. If the Dolphins are aiming to mature and get better as a unit, they'll need a guy like Freeney to come in and bring all that he brings to young players still getting their footing in the league. There's also the matter of the defense feeling slighted a bit by the front office (that has been chastised in the past) focusing solely on offense when cheap defensive options where available.

Yeah! They're certainly spending a ton of money this year on FA. Watching too see if it actually works should be very interesting!

Looks like they're actually trying to get better for the first time in many years...would be nice to see them become relevant again.

It's hard to do much without a quarterback

Miami is trying that is for sure.

If I were a Phins fan, I would feel warm and fuzzy about all of the moves but in the end, without better QB play, its more like cold and bald.

Freeney should sign with The Pats if used as a situation player, he can be extremely valuable and he won't cost that much!!!

About time. Me thinks they are going about it wrong. Should build the team through the draft. Use some of this FA money and buy the smartest drafting mind to be had. But what do I know, I'm just a clown with an opinion.
