Panic move coming for Red Sox?

08:04 AM ET 03.28 | As the regular season draws near, it appears more likely that Jackie Bradley Jr. will open on Boston's roster. The most compelling reason not to put Bradley on the Opening Day roster is to prevent him from reaching six full seasons of service time by the end of the 2018 season. If the Red Sox send Bradley to Triple-A Pawtucket for the first nine games of the season, he wouldn't be eligible for free agency until 2019. It appeared at first that a Red Sox team getting back to a long-term approach to team-building would prioritize that extra season over those first nine games. But a Red Sox team that lost 93 games last season and looks to be in the periphery of the playoff race this season appears to feel some urgency to win now.

If the kid can play, play him. Panic Move? It's not like the Sox can't afford to pay him when he hits FA a year earlier.

Agreed. I don't think service time is even in the equation as to whether to bring him up or send him down.

This **** up my fantasy team already. I have him as a minor league player. (My league allows one MiLB player on spec.) I didn't expect him to make the Sox' roster coming out of spring training and if he does I will either have to move him onto my roster and drop a bench player (Either Chris Davis, Andre Etheir or Nick Swisher) or drop him altogther without seeing how does as player in the majors. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR grumble, grumble.......

If you're vacillating between this kid's potential and a washed up Nick Swisher you best get out of fantasy baseball..........

Swisher had decent numbers last year and in fantasy numbers is what counts.

Besides, Swisher would probably be a starter on your team.

If you're vacillating between this future star's potential vs. a washed up Nick Swisher, I suggest you get out of fantasy baseball.

But hey, I'll throw you a bone here are two minor leaguers I'd pick up to fill Bradley Jr's place: 1.) Yasiel Puig (OF Dodgers) and 2.) Gerrit Cole (P Pirates)

Problem is I do like Bradely. I just would like to have seen him eased onto the major league level.

Why does everything have to be a panic move lately? There's a methodology to building a team and fielding a team and panic is not a part of that methodology.

Yup....there's got to be a story out there....even if you have to make something up, misinterpret the events etc....

The new luxury tax rules loom, and Bradley's agent is Scott Borass. Ellsbury's agent is also Scott Borass. Boston's already prepared to lose Jacoby to the highest (over)bidder after 2013. Bradley's day will come, unless someone can arrange a hit on a certain agent.

9 games with Pawtucket would be the smart move. And, it is also what the negative Boston media secretly wants. Every Red Sox loss in the first two weeks will be coupled with a report on how "JBJ" (yes, they've already given a nickname) did in AAA that day and how he couda won the game for the big club.
