You, too, will learn to love Bryce Harper

08:06 AM ET 03.28 | This is sort of the way it goes for polarizing young star Bryce Harper. You start off hating him, before you even know much about him. You hate him because of what you've heard, or because of what you think you've heard. You're not even sure why you hate him, but you do. Then you see him. You see how hard he plays, how much he loves the game. You start hearing about how hard he works, or you see it for yourself. ... "I wanted to hate him," said one longtime baseball man who coached in the National League last year. "But I couldn't." It's amazing how many people in baseball say the same thing. Coaches and former coaches. Players and ex-players. Managers and ex-managers.

I dont think anyone every doubted his talent or work ethic just his maturity level and maybe a bit overzealous at times. no doubt he's a stud!

I have no idea if Harper is a punk or not because truthfully I really don't know that much about the guy but I gotta say the one player (for better or worse) that kept popping into my mind as I read this article was Pete Rose.

I like the way he plays the game. He's all in.

Your comparing the all-time hits leader to Bryce Harper?!?!?!?

Let's lower the bar A BIT and compare him to that POS that played outfield for the Yankees, Reggie Jackson.

The punk comment was intended to be tongue in cheek.

What bit you in the **** this AM?
And Reggie was a pice of ****? I don't hold Jackson in as much high esteem as many do but I don't think he was a piece of **** ether. He arguably put a few teams over the top in some championship runs.

You need a bit of the hair of the dog?

I like him. I don't think the Pete Rose is too far off in regards to his playing style, but certainly it would be premature to make a comparison of skill level. I became a fan of Harper after his "clown question" comment and watching him play the game. Hopefully, this kid will keep his head on straight, and I think his Mormonism may help keep him in line.

And playing style was the reference I was making, thank you very kindly.

He reminds me of Charley Hustle.

I don't know Harper but generally speaking, people aren't going to love a guy just because he's a hard worker if he's acting like a **** otherwise.
