Diagnosis may end Santana's career

08:15 AM ET 03.29 | The Johan Santana story took a deflating turn on Thursday. Now, sadly, there is a distinct possibility that Santana's wonderful but all-too-brief career will be but a memory. In one of the sadder conference calls in Mets history, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson glumly announced that after studying a new MRI doctors believe Santana has suffered a re-tear of the capsule in his left shoulder. Alderson spoke haltingly and carefully, but the stated diagnosis alone left little doubt that the great Santana's pitching future is clearly in jeopardy. ... Santana is in New York mulling his next step over the Easter weekend, Alderson said. But Alderson called a second shoulder surgery a "strong possibility."

He is in the last guaranteed year of his contract.

And it is not insured. Good job Mets.

I wonder if his impromtu throwing session that he did in a huff after Mets officals shut him down earlier this spring had anything to do with this injury.
I'm not sure how to read Santana but from what I read in the local (NY/CT) papers is that he and the Mets don't always see eye to eye on things such as his offseason conditioning and training habits.

Given the description of the injury - a "re-tear".... not good. How many times can you "re-repair" the same spot.... It just gets weaker and weaker.... Sadly - it doesn't sound good at all... Another young player with solid potential, and efforts worthy of that potential before the injuries - not likely able to fulfil his potential....

Potentially speaking...

Well - not a wealth of threads to settle into today.... Since I am feeling compassionate - with this bad news for the NYM - can we settle here for the day in sympathy?

Anything over 3 years is dumb... IMHO....

You know - I was tempted to replace youth with bowel... But given the circumstances - thought otherwise.... ;-)
