08:02 AM ET 03.29 | With the devil being in the details, Dallas has some urgency to make a deal with quarterback Tony Romo. Based on a thorough reading of Romo's contract, the Cowboys cannot issue him the franchise tag if no deal is reached by the end of the 2013 league year. Therefore, he'd be a free agent if there is no new contract -- giving Romo added leverage. ... Here's why Romo would become a free agent: He technically has three years left on his current contract. Based on paragraphs 27 and 28 of the deal, however, the final two years of Romo's contract void with no action necessary from either party if he's on the Cowboys' roster by the end of the 2013 league year. So, if Romo still is on the roster at that time, he's a free agent.

That ought to help with their cap situation.

I can see it happening, they have had plenty of time to extend the contract. It will be his call though.

How much do you pay a quarterback who consistently chokes in the big games?

What the beep kinda contarct is it that allows a player to void the last 2 years of a contract if still on the roster??? What not just sign a contract that was two yeras shorter instead. 3 years instead of 5!!!!!!!

There's probably a big difference in what Jerry Jones would pay, and what an actual GM would pay.

That's what he's been trying to convince everyone since Jimmy Johnson left town.

Brilliant.

Last year he beat the Giants once, beat the Eagles twice.

I hope he walks. He deserves better than Jerry.

A quite common voidable contract that includes a no tag clause. Not unusual at all. consider for a moment: ALL contracts are voidable by the team at any time, only guaranteed money is required to fulfill contract on teams part. NO contract is voidable by a player unless specified in the contract.

March 29, 2013  10:21 AM ET

I bet 75% of players in the league don't understand what their own contract says. They just cash the checks and wait for the lawyers to tell them what to do.

He is not the problem, and who thinks they are a better team without him. Too easy to blame the QB for an endemic problem. He would get some serious offers if he became UFA. He can lose you a game, sure, any QB can, but he can also win you games, and not that many can do that.
