Pens Loading Up for Record Push

12:34 PM ET 03.29 | The Pittsburgh Penguins have been the hottest team in the league, ripping off 14 consecutive wins, and close to breaking the franchise's own NHL record 17-game streak from 1993. This is apparently not good enough for them, as they've chosen to load up and add even more talent. The Penguins traded for veteran winger Brenden Morrow on Sunday, then added defenseman Douglas Murray on Monday before, on Wednesday, swinging the biggest deal of the season so far, acquiring Jarome Iginla from Calgary. They didn't have to give up roster players to do any of this. Oh, and Evgeni Malkin is back from injury. Pittsburgh has Saturday and Tuesday home dates with the New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres, before a home-and-home with the New York Rangers Wednesday and next Friday to potentially set the NHL record for most consecutive victories.

I for one would be glad to see them lose soon and be done with all this (nonsense).

March 29, 2013  12:57 PM ET

Let's just give them the CUP now!

Carefull what you wish for. The Ducks and the Hawks haven't been the same since.

I'm still waiting to see how they are in the playoffs......they'll be good for sure....but still the "goodest" ?....LOL

They hold up in goal and you might want to....I wouldn't bet against them right now. Beware the 8th seed tho...

March 29, 2013  01:38 PM ET

Wondering how much of a negative impact this "play everyday" season will have on the teams......there has got to be some burnout.

great picture!

We are totally jinxed!

It's gonna make their inevitable playoff exit that much sweeter

you'll have to get it back from The paper Champs (self-team tweak)

Couldn't care less about the winning streak. It's al about getting 16 wins in the SC Playoffs. That's all that matters, the rest is just for the tv/radio sports talk shows

Agree. And getting hot at the end seemed to help last season.

Oh wait didn't they already give it to the paper champs

im suprised none of the papers has tried to add the dreaded asterisk to this streak, seeing as there wasn't a shootout victory when the islanders had 15 straight or the pens back in 92-93.

That would make me chuckle. Still I wouldn't begrudge Iginla a ring!

I'd rather earn it by beating everyone in the SC. Means more that way.

Acutally the win streak has the shoot out win vs. the Habs, and maybe another or two I can't remember, but the 92-93 team didn't have the loser point shoot out victory. Even if they match that streak or beat it the 92-93 streak was more impressive.
Plus the 92-93 is easily one of the best teams ever in the history of the sport, and they didn't win the cup.
But, I'm enjoying the streak. It might be decades before we see them win as many games in a row again.

You beat me to it I didn't see your post.

Won't be the first team to spend a ton of money and get bounced with nothing to show for it.
