04:29 PM ET 03.29 | The Oakland Raiders are close to acquiring quarterback Matt Flynn through a trade with the Seattle Seahawks according to Jason La Canfora. The Seahawks have been looking for a trading partner to deal Flynn and the Raiders are likely in the market for a new quarterback as it appears Carson Palmer is on his way out. Flynn signed a three-year, $19.5 million deal with the Seahawks last offseason, but lost out on the starting job to rookie Russell Wilson. Wilson went on to take every snap of the regular season and lead the Seahawks to the playoffs. With Wilson now established as the long-term starter, Flynn has become an expensive backup and a trade option.

They do seem to enjoy over-paying for mid-level talent.

If this really happens, they are going to have to restructure Flynn's contract. With $9 million of dead money in Palmer, paying Flynn $5-6 Million works out to be MORE than they would have paid Palmer to stay. Doesn't make sense.

If they put the June 1 designation on Palmer's contract, it works out to $745K less. So basically a wash.

I thought they just did that with Kelly - can't you only do that with two players?

They did? Hadn't heard that.

Maybe I heard wrong, but I thought they said they were spreading his dead money over two years.

Seattle paper says the deal will be for a 2014 draft pick. I will be ok with this as long as its a 4th rounder or later.

Albert Breer is saying 2014 and conditional in 2015 - which would be optimal. But Flynn would have to agree to whatever re-worked deal RM offers.

It is a two way street contractually. Seattle has some serious money tied up in a guy they hope never plays a down for them.

McKenzie, you better be right about Flynn then because your tenure will be over soon if you aren't.

I would assume Seattle wouldn't make the trade unless the Raiders take over the entire contract. So either the money is restructured or the entire deal is re-worked, right?

Levi Damien says its a late '13 pick and a '14 pick. The suspense is killing me!

Oy - he's got the inside track. I hope we don't lose a pick this year.

The Raiders are looking at a long, hard haul before they matter again no matter what. They need to redo Flynn's contract so that they don't bury themselves in debt like they did for Carson Palmer, cross their fingers and hope for the best. They really don't have any other options,

Interesting:

Levi Damien ???@LeviDamien
Both Flynn and Palmer want #Raiders QB job. Smart of #Raiders pitting them vs each other 2 see who???s willing to redo their deal to get it

Could it be that Flynn is being used in order to get Palmer to redo his contract? Hmmmm.

word is the price is a 4th round draft pick, that ain't going to mess things up too bad and kind of evens things out from the Carson Palmer trade.
