08:01 PM ET 03.29 | Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee recently reported that Tyrann Mathieu is scheduled to visit the 49ers on April 9. His performance at the combine and at the LSU pro day has generated a lot of interest. A player that has had some off-the-field issues like Mathieu has needs to go to a team that has a strong locker room with a true veteran presence. The 49ers have a need for a corner that can bump inside and cover the slot receivers. Carlos Rogers is the best option on the roster right now. The problem is that will have an $8 million cap hit next year. There is a good chance that he does not return to the 49ers in 2014. Perrish Cox is another corner that has the ability to cover the slot but he saw limited time last year. He will be in the final year of a two-year, $1 million contract that he signed before last season.

This kid is simply too small to play defense in the NFL.

The Niners won't finish first in their division this year.

During the Combine Mathieu developed a relationship with Ed Donatell the secondary coach for the 49ers. The 49ers are certainly interested in Mathieu, probably more as a return man than a CB at this moment. I think the 49ers will draft Mathieu. The last time the 49ers picked a DB that had a great Combine (Taylor Mays), he ended up being somewhat of a bust.

Certainly it cannot hurt to be invited to the 49ers facilities for personal workout. It seems like every player that has visited has had their stock go up the following week.

But they will win the Super Bowl.

If anybody can straighten this kid out it's Harbaugh. Might be a good addition.

Maybe Harbaugh is considering him for special teams?

That's the only place I see him contributing unless he can add 3 inches and 30 lbs (and keep his speed/fluid motion).

I simply don't see a 5'-9" 175 lb guy being effective in the NFL doing this. He looked good playing safety/slot corner in college ... in a league not known for prolific offenses.

That is why his is projected to be drafted in the 3rd round or later. He has more potential as a punt returner with 4.3/ 40 speed, than a DB at this stage in his career. A DB his size can cover WRs that are 6'0" with no problem, that is if he has any CB skills.

Although I agree with you on your consensus that bigger is the future trend for CB's. I must remind you that many teams bypassed Russell Wilson because of his height.
