How Lakers beat Bulls to Gasol

Grizzlies owner Mike Heisley told the Memphis Commercial Appeal the Bulls refused to go into the luxury tax for Pau Gasol, while the Lakers would. So Heisley traded him to Los Angeles. Heisley also said former Lakers executive Jerry West, who left the Grizzlies last season, was not involved in the deal. There's some speculation around the NBA that West pushed the Grizzlies to help the Lakers as Kevin McHale did in the Garnett trade to Boston, helping his former team.

THANK YOU for clearing this issue up. The Lakers made a clean deal without "inside" help. Unlike our RIVALS in green. WOW, it is so cool to have a Lakers vs Celtic rivalry again...I LOVE THIS GAME

If that is true then Reinsdorf and Paxson should be ashamed. The Bulls have plenty of money (made during the Jordan era) and as the 3rd largest city in the US and one of the highest grossing NBA franchises, there is NO FINANCIAL excuse as to why they wouldn't be willing to go into the luxury tax for any player who can improve the team like Gasol would've.

Bulls are pathetic just like other Chicago sports ownerships!

February 4, 2008  09:17 AM ET

I beg to differ Artman...the Bulls do have an excuse...they are the 3rd largest cheap skates in the free world...

February 4, 2008  09:21 AM ET

the bulls had 8.5 million in expiring contracts on the table ( j.smith and c.duhon) and would have traded t.thomas (3.5 million) (no 4 pick) with 2 first round picks for gasol.

that would of cost them about 1.7 million times 2 for the luxury tax big freakin deal thats nothing

it was lot better than the lakers deal but the grizzlies are broke so they took the money under the table, this deal stinks and is a disgrace!

February 4, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Viktor Khryapa $1,9 million is also an expiring contract so if that was added they wouldnt have payed any additional luxury tax so the article is CRAP

As long as the owners continue to watch the salary cap instead of the basketball game, they will continue to fall short where it really counts. I'm not a Laker fan, but I'm glad to see an owner put his team's success ahead of the bottom line. No team yet has ever put a winner on the floor and lost money.

February 4, 2008  10:25 AM ET

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Lakers try some more moves. Not sure how it ends up, but I doubt this is the Lakers lineup that goes into the post season.

And I am sort of laughing a bit. You have the Bulls & Grizzlies owners, deathly afraid of the salary cap and have a bad team.

Then you have the Knicks owners who could care less about it, live well above it, and have a worse team.

How odd.

Once Bynum and Ariza returns, Lakers are unbeatable. Kobe will be sitting on the bench in the 4th quarter all the time done with his job. He's not needed anymore.

February 4, 2008  11:04 AM ET

I'm sorry, but there is now way Jerry West didn't have anything to do with this. Memphis traded their best player for Kwame Brown. Expiring contract or not, this is a scam, and if I'm the rest of the western conference GMs I am PO'd. I am sure they turned down way better offers then this. I have no respect for Memphis Grizzlies organization, after this dirty trade. I will give Lakers credit for committing Grand Larceny and getting away with it.

February 4, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Jerry west is not the gm of the grizzlies anymore

February 4, 2008  11:41 AM ET

What more can be added to this humiliating and sad season for the Bulls? They start off as favorites to contend for the east crown, and now they wuss out in a trade that would have made them leaps and bounds better.

Sad day.

Hey, remember when we used to have Jordan? That was cool.

February 4, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Which is why that figure heady they are currently calling a "GM" should be fired after this bone head move. Don't think Jerry West's doesn't have a cell phone.

With the development of Bynum, it was LOVELY IN LAKERLAND! With good riddance of Kwame and the acquisition of Gasol, It's LOVELIER IN LAKERLAND!! When we're NBA Cahmpions, it'll be LOVELIEST IN LAKERLAND!!!

February 4, 2008  12:07 PM ET

The point is that Gasol is a Laker.....now with Kobe....and Bynum....and Odom..can't say it doesn't look good in writing

February 4, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Now that Kwame is gone I think Laker fans are happier. Lakers are feeling like contenders again now that they have Gasol.

February 4, 2008  12:42 PM ET

The LOGO probably still has some influence in Memphis, so take that Mr.McHale!!!

February 4, 2008  12:53 PM ET

Sad

So Many Laker haters

February 4, 2008  12:54 PM ET

The GMs can whine 'til hearts are content. They ALL knew Gasol was on the block & that Memphis was clearing cap room. So they have NO excuses for getting a deal done. If a solid GM like the King's Petrie or San Antone's Buford pulled off this deal, they would be highly praised for it (and rightfully so). Give Kupchak his props, he went out and made 3 excellent moves in the past year: keeping Bynum, getting Ariza while unloading Cook on Orlando, and now getting Gasol for Kwame. He's GOT to be up there for Exec of the Year.
