49ers unlikely to sign Carson Palmer

06:06 PM ET 03.31 | Carson Palmer is fully expected to be released by the Raiders once the Matt Flynn trade is complete. Palmer reportedly has the 49ers on top of his wish list, although he has no hope of getting a starting job with Colin Kaepernick entrenched. San Francisco has cap room to spare, but they're unlikely to give him much money to hold a clipboard. Palmer is due a prohibitive $13 million if Oakland hangs on to him in 2013. The Cardinals remain the most logical landing spot for Palmer when he hits the open market.

Why does anyone care what teams Carson Palmer wants to play for? There seems to be only one team with any level of interest in him, and that's Arizona. He probably is going to end up being released and then he will sign with the Cards at a significant salary reduction. Story over.

Even if he accepts being a back up (which isn't totally clear), Carson Palmer would be a horrible choice to back up Kap. It's the reverse of the situation of having Tim Tebow backing up Mark Sanchez. Depending on which one is playing, you're running a completely different offense. Palmer is going to the Cards because that is where he has the best chance to start.

Figures. The one QB that the NY Jets SHOULD HAVE interest in and they aren't. Palmer isn't THAT good but at least he's better than anything they have currently. The Jets have been rumored to have interest in every single other QB that's been cut this offseason except the one they should. Save your money Rex. You'll need it when you're unemployed at this time next year.

Vince Young would be a perfect fit for a team needing a quarterback. ... He is Motivated, Hungry and Determined to prove he can still play this game at a high level.... and that he can lead a team deep into the playoffs and possibly to the SuperBowl... Vince Young is salary-cap friendly "Low Risk - High Reward" type of guy... He's a wise choice for the smart Team Owner/GM....

Only problem is, he sucks.

Last time I looked QB's were judged much like goalies. Based on their win %. Vince knows how to win. He's done it since college. He may not have incredible stats but the kid just always wins. And lets be serious. He made an extremely mediocre titans team look pretty darn good.

Yes, let's be serious...

The QB position has more to do with what's going on from the neck up, and VY hasn't shown he has what it takes in that department. If GMs and coaches thought he was that competent a signal-caller, I don't think he'd be trolling for work at his Alma Mater's pro day. Maybe he latches onto a team as a clipboard-slinger, but it doesn't seem right now like too many teams even want him clogging the roster in that capacity.

The motivated, hungry and determined part of that is all that any GM would believe.

The 49ers traded Alex Smith. In the NFL, you need 2 capable QB's since your backup is just an injury away from being a starter.

I don't see how picking up Carson Palmer gives the 49ers a CAPABLE backup QB!!!

As a Niner fan I cringe at the idea of this guy being even a backup for my team . Palmer is a washed up joke with no mobility . I seriously doubt the Niners would give him a look.

Funny how all these players want to go to the 9er's. Its like I can't earn a SB on my own, tried it so I will climb on board a team that can.
