01:51 PM ET 03.31 | With the Miami Marlins putting the finishing touch on their opening day roster, news surfaced that they made the surprising decision to add 20-year-old top pitching prospect Jose Fernandez to their starting rotation. The Marlins announced their decision to purchase Fernandez's contract and add him to the season-opening rotation today. Fernandez will not turn 21 years old until July, so the early starting experience could work wonders for his development as a player. Last season, Fernandez recorded 158 strikeouts in 134 innings. With his strong performance in the minor league ranks, he was named the fifth-best baseball prospect by Baseball America. Fernandez will make his major league debut on April 7 against the New York Mets in the Big Apple.

Fernandez is one out of exactly three people in the Marlins organization that folks like me can be excited about right now,the others being not-Mike Stanton and Christian Yelich.

One day Rob Brantly, Jacob Turner, Jake Marisnick, Marcell Ozuna and Andrew Heaney might be something special but for now its just the three guys mentioned earlier. And to be honest Fernandez and Yelich still are unproven, no matter how good they looked in the Minors.

Which means Giancarlo is sorta all we have. Sad face.
